ark Madoff, the older of Bernard L. Madoff’s two sons, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Saturday, the second anniversary of the day his father was arrested for running a gigantic Ponzi scheme that shattered thousands of lives around the world.

Mark Madoff

“Mark Madoff took his own life today,” Martin Flumenbaum, Mark Madoff’s lawyer, said in a statement on Saturday. “This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy.”

One city official said that the first notification, via 911, was at 7:27.18, on Saturday morning, and the call was for a, “possible suicide.” The call came from a fourth-floor, private house at 158 Mercer Street, a 13-story building on the edge of Soho.

Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said that the body had been discovered by Mark Madoff’s father-in-law. “He came there this morning,” said Mr. Browne said.

Mr. Browne said that Mark Madoff’s “2-year-old son was asleep in an adjoining bedroom.”

Interesting twist. I hope the 2 year old is looked after...

With sadness it seems the sins of the grandfather are now to be laid upon his grandson.

It's hard to imagine the fall from grace, and the speed with which it must have occurred. One day these people are part of a successful dynasty, probably proud members of the community, the next day everyone perceives them as common thieves.

Was it worth it Bernie?

re: Bernie Madoff

He might have deserved the jail term, but he didn't deserve this.

Let's hope the little guy comes out OK.

I knew a *billionaire* who'd lost a child to drugs, he was a broken man, he died a broken man, he said he'd happily go back in time to a 2 up 2 down terrace with a tenner in his pocket if he could have her back and make a better go of being a 'decent' husband and father..

$50bn is one heck of a lot of misery to great many 000s of people from whom that money was stolen from.

They lived in the lap of luxery whilst millions struggle on a daily basis all over the US.

Did they deserve it?

I would ask the question what have they done to deserve anything they got?

I like to think I'm a compassionate - for some people I make exceptions for.

I wish the best only for the two year old and hope he grows to be a better normal human being.

The details of this case are a little disturbing. Mark Madoff was alone in the apartment in NY with the 2yr old, and had been sending emails to his wife in Florida (there with the daughter) until about 4am in the morning. Obviously the emails were fairly dramatic, including one which asked that the wife send someone around to check on the boy.

So Mark hanged himself in the living room, with the 2yr old asleep in the bedroom. Now, forget everything else, this is simply f*cking irresponsible. What if he had kicked over a lamp in the process, and had started a fire which then burned whilst he dangled from the ceiling?

We can simply have no idea what he had been through - I reckon he felt he would allow his family to make a clean break if he did away with himself, so he might have felt he was doing the honourable thing. But if that were the case, he should have topped himself without putting his son in danger at the same time.

Who can tell what was passing through his head under those circumstances? Cool, calm and collectedly he, probably, thought that someone would be around very quickly after the last email to his wife and that the kid would be alright for a few minutes and that he had better get cracking or he would be cut down while still alive.

This was a spur of the moment decision, or he would have made sure that the baby was with someone else.

I agree MR.

Mind you - these people don't exactly have a history of worrying about other people...

Note to the rest of the family - if you are going to Madoff yourself - get a babysitter.

You're right of course, it's not really what most people would imagine to be a rational time, and he did tell the wife to send someone round (her stepfather went a few hours later).

When I was 13 my best friend (who was the same age) moved to a different part of the country.. a couple of years later he hanged himself in his mother's loft using a bicycle chain. The mother was the one who found him. Some things are simply impossible to imagine.

Ok, this thread is making me down. I'm also starting to feel apocalyptic about the bond markets. Time for a mince pie.

Yes, not Sunday afternoon contentment, is it? Just another of life's tragedies and best to move on.

I've known 2 people that have committed suicide, a few others that have attempted it (I have that affect on people obviously :D). No offence MR, but you havn't got a fookin clue what you're talking about on this thread.

Sorry, didn't realise you were the resident suicide expert.

Which bit do you consider so uninformed, just out of curiousity?

All of it, you've sounded off like a Daily Hate reader, who comments on an article and gets 300+ green arrows...

Theres no way that one guy alone can pull off the heist of the century .

Read the article again....at the end it says ...the sons were derelict in their duties. :whistling

Yeah well you and Atilla usually sound like you are paid up members of the communist party that resent pretty much everyone who you percieve to have more money or opportunities than you.

The poor bloke committed suicide, and left behind him a family. It's a tragedy, not an oppportunity to get on your f*****g soap box, a$$hole.
