I am interested in being a mentor to either one or a very small group of traders.

I want to do this because someone did the same for me and helped my progression from trading part time to professional futures trader.

I, in turn, am going to help someone else to achieve the same, whether your goal is to trade for yourself from home or for a firm.

My mentoring is NOT going to be me just giving you a profitable strategy (I have done that already on this forum and if that is what you want then you can save time and go and find my thread).

It is going to be about working with you to help you develop a way of trading that works for you. I am a swing trader (trying to evolve into a position trader).

If you want to be a scalper that is completely fine.

What we will work on is choosing a market(s), understanding why it moves in the way it does, creating a detailed trading plan and learning the discipline to keep to it.

There will be a lot of emphasis on the result of emotion in trading as I think emotional intelligence is what seperates winning traders from those that lose.

I am not going to charge any money whatsoever for my time BUT you will eventually need money to trade with. If finances are limited I can help you build a trading stake. I am also willing to back a trader that I think has potential with my own money.

You should realise that this is going to be a time consuming endeavour that is going to involve you doing a lot of work on your own time. From 9pm Sunday to 9pm Friday I am covering the markets every waking hour I get. I don't expect anyone to have that same level of commitment I do but at the same time if you only have 30 minutes free in the evening then it may be best to forget it :)

Because this is a big commitment on my behalf I reserve the right to be selective in who I choose.

Send me a pm if you are interested and we can go from there.

An interesting experiment...how will the member / readers of T2W benefit from this? if at all

To be honest, I haven't thought about that cv. Perhaps they could keep a journal which will allow others to see their progress? But only if they felt comfortable doing so.

An excellent idea and very interesting offer. Before committing to putting forth the time and effort required to participate in this project, I'd like to see proof that it would be worthwhile -- both proof that you can trade successfully and proof that you can effectively communicate your methods.

jj

I think that has already been proven if you follow his main thread.
Most folks would disagree with that. Please do not take this to be disparaging of t_d or his thread. From what I read on that thread (and you can correct me if I'm wrong) trader_dante is a twenty-something with a full time job despite having traded for seven years. Now that he's finally experienced a few months of success in really small accounts he believes he's proven himself to be a trader worthy of mentoring. Proof of trading skill takes a lot longer than just a few months.

Granted, he's more qualified than many would-be mentors out there  (though this says more about them than him). While his motives appear sincere and are laudable, it's just not clear he's got the ability to follow through.

It's FREE. Free means, "what's the risk"? The proof should be in the pudding (U.S. term) AFTER accepting and taking him up on his (very bold) offer. To have Trader_Dante jump through a bunch of hoops would be risking a lot. If my offer were to be met with criticism and/or a bunch of hurdles I would pull it immediately.

You would not believe the daily amount of money people pay me for mentoring. It's truly incredible. If a successful trader offers his/her time FREE of charge I would highly recommend jumping on it. If it turns out to suck, then all you're out is sometime.

Just some thoughts.

Time is your most valuable resource. Trading capital is your second most valuable resource. Both are at risk here.

I personally believe that the biggest risk is not moving forward with controlled, concise, elevated education---in our case trading education.

If I want to be a golfer I don't read a long golfing book or even a series of books; I don't sit in front of the TV all winter watching golfers to learn to play; I don't even go to some golfing seminar to learn to play golf. However I do go out and find myself a golf pro and learn from him/her soaking in every moment they will give me. If that golf pro is willing to teach, train, and mentor for FREE then I am all over it. MatheM---the rub here is whether Dante is a pro or at least a level or two beyond a willing student. I would think that the first couple of hours of education might expose any weaknesses. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.... ;)

Actually, there are quite a few people (maybe even the majority -- some of their identities would surprise you as they are big names) who sound very credible but couldn't trade their way out of a paper bag. I'm not sure what value those people would have to offer beyond, say, sheer entertainment value on an internet forum...

jj

Not that you're suggesting that TD would fit into that bag, my dear magician.

Personally, I've tried to mentor others in my style, one quite publicly, and found it a difficult exercise from a distance. It is likely to have costs but all elements of learning to trade seem to have costs. The real key is to get value from those costs.

So enough debate (or I'll have to return to my role as Policeman most frequently charged with excessive force) ... let us encourage this process and see what we can learn from it.

Dante, I assume that you'll keep it somewhat public so that the lessons can be shared. If your chosen volunteer wishes to train under an alternative name then we mods will be happy to assist in ensuring their anonymity.

I'm open to all possible outcomes -- just asking the obvious questions is all. Time and money are the ultimate arbiters in this business. Good luck to all involved!

jj

No, I do short, intensive workshops for advanced systematic traders and this is nothing like what t_d is talking about here. I've been fortunate enough to have pit traders, CTAs, and professional traders attend. I was actually exploring an interest in asking t_d to allow me to participate, thus an interest in the would-be mentor's credentials. Keeping one's mind open to new ideas and methods is crucial to continued success.

jj

Well, if I wanted to I would. It's as simple as that. I've turned down serious offers and will continue to do so as I'm simply not interested in doing it. Sounds too much like work to me.

P.S. Welcome to Legendary status!

1000 posts...perhaps I should get out more often :whistling

Surely the "work" has to be done by the students and not the other way around

cv

"Sounds like work" means to me it doesn't sound like something I would particularly enjoy doing, rather than the obvious meaning. :) There's no doubt that if done properly both the student and teacher would be exerting themselves mightily.

==================================================

have done it for close to eight years now, and its WORK !

you answer the same questions repeatedly as each new wave of "students" comes in the door and you begin to understand how hard it must have been for your teachers to face you each day, knowing even before you what questions you would be asking.

i prefer dealing with intermediate to expert traders myself, where they can latch onto some part, if not all, of how i tweak the pips (that begins to sound a bit beyond the pall of a "family" site !)

so hats off to one who wishes to do just that, and gl to all who continuously teach !

Goodluck. There is a saying,..."You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

What a generous idea Tom. (y) You definitely have my respect.

If my trading doesn't improve this month and your quota is not filled, I may take you up on that offer.

Good trading.
