Hey guys just wondering what computers you use for trading... In the past i have mainly traded bank shares and all i waited for was a simple price, so it didn't matter whether i was at home home or my iPhone in a cafe, all i was waiting for was a price a couple of times a week. Now im starting to get more in to short term technical trading, and there has been so many times switching between charts where i have thought "damn, what a cracking set up and i missed that" For any of you who are big in to day trading do you use a 'proper' trading computer? If so are they geared up to be faster? and do the multi-screen systems work really well? These types look decent:

i'm using a single monitor at the moment but it has room for 2 charts so it works ok.

i'm planning to get another monitor eventually, probably when elder scrolls: skyrim is released (or SWTOR) and i upgrade video card

i think the main thing is staying away from spending too much on technology for trading, otherwise you're only eating into you'r returns; you only need a good interwebs connection and fast computer if you're a retail trader

obviously a professional trader needs epic computers and epic screens and a bottle of epicness, maybe some snake oil too

Yeah i have done ok from my mac, but its tricky flicking between pages all the time... if i were to spend more time day trading i'd be investing in a multi screen computer, would be much easier if the flash didn't crash all the time too, mine does this and all the charts go off and i have to restart them which can be a bitch if they had lines drew all over them

I use a laptop, its a fast i7 chip but thats not really needed. Sometimes I just use a netbook.
I might invest in an additional plug in screen one day, the vidcard can handle it.
But rather than do too much flicking between charts I limit myself to just a few pairs
for short term trades.

3 screen set up is what you should be aiming for, it'll only cost approx 1500 quid. But tbh I can/do take trades even off my little netbook, has 3gb ram, deliberately hardly anything on it, is as quick as anything else I've got; other laptops, family pc, office pc..really doesn't matter, if the trade alerts i'll take it on anything to hand..But then again I only swing trade, despite a brief flirtation with low TFs I'll never go back to trading noise, so my need to be in at the 'b of the bang' is not as critical as others...

Cheers for that rc450 will read it, here's my set up for now... nice and chilled out, its well hot today already, my mac doesn't like charts and i get 'plug in fail' all the time

Yeah 3 screen is what i was thinking, its not necessary just yet as im still weening myself to the day trading side after being burned a few times in the past, i wouldn't get all the gear until im 100% certain that day trading was my thing, its going well up to now though

Its all down to your graphics or video card

I use a Matrox card which allows me 4 screens, but I believe they also do one for 8. The additional cost involved will simply be the cost of the card + additional screens.

this little badboy keeps me entertained,got most of it off of ebay and knocked up the monitor stands from a bit of 4"x2"
check out the desk (top on old one wasn't big enough).... yep, that's a bit of ply that's been kicking around in the shed for a few years, just had to clean the mouse crap off it!
one day i'm gonna splash out for some varnish and give it a coat!

i'm currently working on a desk with a crappa in it so i don't need to move once seated, i'm a little concerned howard is going to beat me to it and get the patent though..

i bought/made most of this a couple of years ago when i was starting out, no point in blowing ££££'s until you know that you stand a chance getting it back.

it's also great for those lonely nights in when i wanna get romantic with myself

Thanks mate, i'll be sure to get a video card sorted at the very least for now as that keeps going all the time, and the charts just flick off and take ages to set up again, and nice set up btw! looks ideal for trading. Once you hook them up does the computer just know to allow the extra space for all the new pages?

p.s lol about the lonely nights bit, i bet it comes in handy ha

I use 3 monitors, though only 2 are for trading. The 3rd is to browse the net while I wait for price to do it's thing. Computer itself is nothing special, probably on the low end nowadays compared to what's current.

Cool, and good idea to have one spare for normal stuff... do you know how it works when you plug it in though? Do you drag the windows on to each screen? How does the computer know? Thanks

you can open a window on one screen or spread the window across as many screens as you like and it opens up as it was shut down or you can set it up to open as you like.
i'm a lethal wepon with a pc and managed to set mine up without any problem at all so anyone with pc savvy will find it a breeze.

You need a video card that can work with 2 monitors at once. It will will have two ports on the end of it, one for each monitor. My pc came with onboard video card and I installed one myself that has two ports. That allows me to use 3 monitors at once, although I had to select which monitor was primary in the Bios.

Anyway, it works as if it's just one huge monitor. You can drag things across and it appears on the next monitor. It's great.
