Time to end the biomass scam: Drax, Britain's largest carbon emitter, received £1bn in subsidies last year - £2.7m a day and more than £100k an hour, which we all pay for

Households handed over a record amount of nearly £1bn in public subsidies to Drax last year, the UK's largest carbon emitter, analysis shows.

The controversial biomass power station receives 'overly generous' payments of £2.7million a day and more than £100,000 an hour, energy think tank Ember found.

It has been the UK's biggest emitter for the past ten years and – despite its subsidies falling from next year – is expected to remain the biggest emitter until at least 2030.

Drax received a record £999million in Government subsidies – paid for through consumer bills – last year despite claims that it uses wood from virgin forests.

Incredibly, the energy is classed as renewable because the wood pellets it uses are from forests where trees are cut down and new trees are planted.

In April 2026, Drax power station entered the final twelve months of high subsidy payments under the current scheme, the think tank said.

From 2027, the subsidy available will be roughly halved to around £460million per year, beginning its phase-out, energy think tank Ember said.

However, the scale of biomass burning all but guarantees Drax will continue to be the UK's largest emitter until the end of the decade, it added.

Reform says it will deport up to 400,000 asylum seekers if it wins the next election, creating 'pop up' detention centres to hold thousands

Up to 400,000 asylum seekers will be ‘immediately detained’ and deported if Reform win the next general election.

Revealing new details of its pledge to tighten Britain’s border controls, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK said all illegal migrants who arrived in the five years prior to the next election would be locked up.

It would include those who arrived by small boat or clandestinely in the backs of lorries, as well as those who claimed asylum using fake documents, the party said.

The figure would come on top of about 600,000 deportations Reform last year indicated it would enforce – which the party said would mostly be adults living in the UK illegally – making a grand total of one million.

A Reform government would also review all grants of asylum going back five years, leading to further deportations, it said.

Anyone who claimed asylum after overstaying a visa would be detained and deported, the party’s new policy set out.

A third category of asylum seeker - those whose home countries are now deemed to be safe - would also be stripped of their humanitarian visas and be eligible for removal.

The detention of such large numbers of people would pose a huge challenge as the current capacity of immigration removal centres is less than 3,000 beds.

But a Reform spokesman predicted many of those targeted by the new policy would choose to leave Britain voluntarily.

A RACIST - A CRIMINAL - GROSS CULTURAL IGNORANCE, AS IS CASE WITH MOST RACISTS
Opening the case for the prosecution on Monday, Phil Bradley KC said Ashby 'racially and religiously abused her' during the attack, calling her a 'f***ing Muslim b****' and telling her she was dirty.

The victim's screams could be heard on horrifying footage captured by a nearby CCTV camera, which was played to the court on Monday.

She told the first officers to arrive on the scene: 'He called me a f***ing Muslim b****. I said I am not Muslim, I am Sikh. He was saying that he was a British master.'

She said: 'He called me a f***ing Muslim b****. I said I am not Muslim, I am Sikh. He was saying that he was a British master.'

In a police interview that was played to the jury, the woman told investigators that Ashby had made her repeatedly tell him that he was a master and she was a b**** during the ordeal.

His DNA was retrieved from an intimate swab of the victim, his fingerprints were found on a vape which he left in the house before fleeing and his DNA was also found on a toothbrush he used in the bathroom, the court heard.

Ashby was arrested in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham two days after the attack and was subsequently picked out by the victim in a police identity parade, the court heard.

Mr Bradley told the court: 'When he was booked into custody, (Ashby) told police "you never see any English men in Perry Barr anymore".

Beaten for being a Jew on the streets of Britain: Outrage at 'utterly abhorrent' antisemitic attack on orthodox Jewish building inspector in Slough

A sickening video showing a Jewish man fearing for his life after a stranger shouted 'dirty mother f****** Jew' at him during an unprovoked assault has been condemned as 'utterly abhorrent' antisemitism.

Footage capturing the horrifying ordeal shows the victim, who was standing outside a property while carrying out work as a building inspector, being subjected to a torrent of racial slurs, including that he was a 'baby killer'.

At one point, the attacker threatens the man with physical violence, saying 'I'll break your f****** jaw' before accusing the man of 'killing kids in Palestine'.

Shockingly, a passerby can also be heard shouting from his car encouraging the man to physically attack his Jewish victim.

The incident, which took place in Slough, Berkshire, on Monday afternoon, has sparked widespread outrage from campaign groups with Campaign Against Antisemitism calling it 'Jewish-hatred without disguise'.

It said: 'Jews going about their daily lives are not safe from being subjected to vile assault and violent threats. This is simply untenable for Jewish life in Britain.'

The Community Security Trust (CST) a charity which protects the Jewish community, called the attack 'utterly abhorrent', while a Rabbi who knows the victim has revealed he is now in hiding.

It comes as police continue to investigate a series of antisemitic attacks against Jewish communities across Britain, including arsons on synagogues and volunteer-led charities.

THE USUAL
The leafy Surrey village that's home to a BBC presenter where Afghan asylum seeker staying in three-bed cottage spat at group of mothers as he 'harassed primary school pupils'
An Afghan asylum seeker who was allegedly harassing girl pupils at a primary school was confronted by a group of horrified mothers.

And the surly migrant is alleged to have spat at the group of parents who rebuked him and told them: 'I'm allowed to stand where I want - I paid £3,000 to be here.'

Families hit out today after the migrant was arrested just weeks after he had been moved into their desirable riverside village in Surrey in 'secret' after repeatedly appearing outside the school.

Le farce! French could get tens of millions in UK taxpayers' money under new Channel deal even if number of small boat migrants goes UP

France could still receive extra millions under Labour’s new ‘payment by results’ Channel deal even if the number of migrants goes up, it has emerged.

Downing Street suggested the agreement may allow British taxpayers’ cash to be handed over if small boat arrivals fail to reduce.

The deal – signed by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood today – includes an unconditional £500million to pay for beach patrols in France, plus £160million in performance-related funding.

Asked if the extra cash would hinge on the number of crossings being reduced, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said: ‘No, this is another tool in our armoury to reduce the number of illegal boat crossings.

‘The conditionality – the specific metrics – we are working on.’

He suggested the French performance would be measured on factors such as the number of arrests rather than the total number of crossings.

‘What we have announced today is the principle, for the first time ever, of this flexible funding arrangement,’ he said.

‘We will now work on the metrics that will evaluate that success.
