Transferring files without using email

I want to send some large files to a friend but they're too big to be sent by email.

Can I send them direct to his IP address somehow?

or set up some webspace (eg lycos.co.uk or angelfire.com) and upload the files there...

then you just email your mate the link...

and hey presto, ingested testicles..

MSN looks like a straightforward way.
I've also been googling and found this: http://www.hitmill.com/internet/ftp.html which describes the ftp protocol which is another method I suppose.

Bigbusiness, That really is an awesome link, I've been doing tranfers over automated FTP via tripod but theyr'e so touchy at times and limit is quite low. This one's really got me out of trouble

For simplicity and ease of use www.yousendit.com is superb.

Incidentally there's a similar service at www.dropload.com but the limit is lower - 100MB - and you have to sign up for it.
