I didn't realize they never had an official symbol for the currency before, so I learned something new today. :smart:

"The Russian public have picked a first official symbol for the rouble, choosing a sign the central bank said would enhance the appeal of the once-tarnished currency on global markets." http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/12/11/russia-rouble-symbol-idINDEE9BA0AG20131211

Wow that's really something to celebrate
All this time I thought all currencies already have their own symbols..

I just assumed the ruble already had an official sign, but apparently the Indian Rupee also only created an official sign in 2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_rupee_sign

Before that, people would simply type "Rs" like they still do for other countries whose currency is also called the rupee such as Pakistan.
