They are trying to but, it still fills the Monumental ring with spectators. I suppose that it is like fishing (I'm not trying to cause an argument here, just making a comparison) there is a lot of politics and tourism in it.

The other Barcelona ring, at Plaza de España, is being converted to an amusement centre so, at least, there was not enough work for both of them.

It is an unpleasant spectacle, I agree. When I was at sea in 1959 I went to one near Cadiz and the monotony , after seeing three bulls killed with the prospect of another three to go (hards seats, too, BTW) put me off for good.

We have a client who is crazy about it and his hobby is to have one of the largest private bull-fighting libraries in Spain. Every year he has two catalogues brought up to date.

Thank you for drawing this to our attention.

Let's hope the poor man makes a full and speedy recovery.

To me you clients life & joy is partially based on suffering of other animals - for what purpose? Display act of heroism and courage? I think not. I can't relate to any aspect of it at all. Perhaps it is a cultural acquired taste - I have no idea.

We just watched a man catch a fish on the Worthing pier and throw it back again saying it wasn't big enough. There was some balance of life there I guess.

Looking at that picture - I would be very interested to know what was going through that Spaniards head as he was gored whilst still clutching that sword which he no doubt wanted to drive into the poor bulls organs amongts all the others. I assume the bulls die at the end of this show.

I also wonder whether he will step back into the ring with half a cheek. :-0

Sadly - I feel no mercy or admiration for the idiot.

I am very much on the side of the bull -:clap:

I think that most of the spectators are. They pay to see the toreador get his, otherwise watching bulls get killed would become a very boring process. As I said, three were enough for me.

I have attended a bull fight out of curiosity. I too found it very distasteful and would not like to repeat the experience.

I can appreciate that the matador displayed skill and courage, but I really can't see any justification for the spectacle.

Nonetheless, before we get carried away with the "I'm with the bull" bit, we might remember that a human being is lying in hospital severely wounded. He was wounded in the course of carrying out a legal activity that is actively supported by millions of people.

They might be wrong, and we might disagree with the activity, but that is hardly a reason to rejoice over a man being horribly injured.

Do the bulls get sold for meat or anything? Or are they just dumped and burried?

Seems a dreadful waste...

I've heard it said that it is in great demand but I don't know. Nothing gets thrown away thse days, does it? Everything gets put in freezers and Heaven knows where it will end up.

Poor animal taunted and maddened with pain with lances stuck in it.
On its dying day it fought for and achieved some sort of justice.
Brave bull !

Richard

Considering all the crap we have to put up with coming out of the EU, Spain being a member, I consider it our duty to campaign for the abolition of this activity...just to **** them off in the same way they **** us off. We wouldn't want people getting the idea they can go out and enjoy themselves would we.

I think it is bizarre and depressing that in the 21st century so many otherwise civilized people still consider the torture of animals to be a legitimate form of fun and 'entertainment'. As a 'sporting' activity, I would put it on the same par as football hooliganism.

Isn't it? Nevertheless, bull-fighting is not the cruelest sport around. **** and dog fighting still abound on remote farms. Do away with all this and humankind will find another way to enjoy themselves. I am the ultimate pessimist on human behaviour and nothing surprises me.

Do they discuss banning bull fighting like we talk about fox hunting? Or is there no contest like majority of people in favour of bull fighting?

Do/can you vote in Spain?

Interesting topic re: banning it - based on other member countries opposition. That is bound to open up a can of worms for national/local traditions. Sounds very interesting. It is like unifying a Federal States of Europe via the back door... :cheesy:

Sounds all **** & bull to me - but after squaring up the debt fiasco, why not?:clap:

The Spaniards seem to have a thing about bulls.

What do all you outraged bull supporters think about the Pamplona bull run?

Yes, it is very controversial but there must be a strong lobby in favour of it. I don't go into the details of it too much except that our client tells me that the ring is, usually, packed to capacity---mainly by tourists, incidentally. I think that if the foreigners stayed away it would die off. As I said, one ring is closed already in BCN.

Vegetarians read no further, but for fellow carnivores here, I wonder if there is a certain amount of hypocrisy going on when we criticise the Spaniards for this kind of thing, knowing that our eating habits are responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent animals probably every day. Yes, they are killed "humanely" (I am probably one of the few people here who have witnessed it - when I was quite young actually - wouldn't be allowed nowadays), but it's still pretty nasty. (More will have seen it probably on "Kill it, Cook It, Eat it" on Channel 4, but that's not quite the same as being able to smell it and hear a lot more of the animals' complaints than they would have allowed on TV).

I have no intention of stopping being a carnivore. I believe it is what we evolved to be, but nevertheless, the killing of animals to support our "habit" is one of those taboo subjects that most of us don't like to think about, and dwarfs bull-fighting and bull runs (ha!) for body count. Does killing animals for sport make it any worse than killing to eat? Possibly, but it makes little difference to the animal, I would say.

I don't particularly agree with fox-hunting, but the campaign to outlaw it was a huge waste of resources IMHO, especially as it was used by Blair to divert attention away from really important issues.
