Don't know what you mean by "real" but I think they offer margin or cash accounts.

Being a U.S. Stock Trader based in the UK, I would have to recommend interactive brokers. Their fees are excellent - you can buy 200 shares for $1.00. Be aware of their active trading fee of $10 per month. If you don't make enough trades to generate $10 a month in commissions, they will deduct the difference from your account.
Last time I checked, their minimum opening account balance was $2,000.
I would not recommend you try to trade U.S. stock with an amount less than that anyway.

Quite frankly that would be the lower end of what I would recommend as an account balance for normal stock/options trading . In addtion, if you intend to daytrade, you will need a minimum of $25,000 for US stocks and options by US regulations

If you do not have these amounts there may be brokers who accept smaller deposits, but you will still be hit by the daytrading regulations. Alternatively you can look at trading other instruments or markets where these restrictions do not apply

No offence intended, but if $4000 is huge, then I would consider stock trading to be a dangerous activity. Under capitalisation is a big hurdle to overcome.

Hi All,
Just checked the Interactive Brokers website and in fact the new opening account balance is now $5,000.
This must have been a fairly recent adjustment as a client of mine recently opened a new account with them with just $2,000.
I have to agree with roguetrader by the way - be very careful with trading if your view of $4k or $5k is "huge" - many new traders suffer because they are undercapitalised.
Having said that, you can position trade qute amply with just the minimum $5k. Even with this small amount of capital, if you trade it correctly, you can make 50% to 80% per year.

I trade 5-10 times per month and have found Charles Schwab excellent. Their StreetSmart Pro has all the tools you'd ever want and it links directly to their website--for tons of research info and reports from Argus, Reuters, Goldman Sachs, all the news bureaus, etc. Frequent traders pay $9.95 per trade but there are no other fees and the toll free, 24 hour support is excellent, even to discuss a trade. Their UK local support is also very good.
They need a bit of UK marketing help. They are a household name in the US. They had a UK presence until some time in the 90's--but sold it to Barclays. As they hold frequent training sessions and occasional meetings of clients, I've met quite a few serious traders--anything from day-traders to position traders (like me.) If you want to speak with someone at the UK Schwab office, call 0 207 638-3399 and select option #1. Their support (US based via toll free number from the UK) is superb and open to discussing anything from best ways to play a specific trade, balance of portfolios and managing their software.
