Spread Betting vs. Broker

I am just stumbling into trading so please forgive the noobness of my question. I was just wondering what the difference between using a spread betting firm and a broker is? I know spread betting is tax free in the UK but does anyone know if it is tax free and legal in Canada (where I currently live)?
