Any advice on this plan would be much appreciated.
I'm currently in the UK on R&R, half way through an operational tour in Iraq with the TA. I finish my tour at the end of may and have been looking into the possibility of studying for the Securities Institute certificate in securities and derivatives whilst in Iraq and then sitting the exams in June/July after returning to the UK. I've been interested in trading for a while now and would like to pursue it as a full time career when I finish my tour. My plan at the moment is to sit the SII exams and then send out speculative applications to proprietary trading firms initially and possibly also to look for administrative type positions within other institutions if the former option does not prove successful (basically anything to get my foot in the door). I don't have a PhD or Cambridge degree so IB's and Hedge funds are most likely out of the question and I'm not rich enough to be self funded, though after my tour is finished I should have accumulated sufficient funds to provide for myself in london for a year or two. Prior to going to Iraq I was a computer programmer (a fairly boring career that I don't wish to return to) and I've just turned 24, which I hope isn't too old to still be considered for a position. Is this plan a viable option?
I've looked at the syllabuses and sample papers on the securities institute web-site, they also appear to offer a workbook for the regulatory paper however I couldn't find a similar book for the securities and derivatives paper. Could anyone who's sat the exams recently recommend some books for either paper please?
Any book or web-site recommendations to further my knowledge of trading in general would also be appreciated, so far I've read 'come into my trading room', market wizards and 'reminicences of a stock operator' as well as browsing various threads on the Trade2win and elitetrader forums.
Thanks
Dave
