Has Anyone Got Securities & Derivatives Exam Advice?

Hi,

I have to sit the Unit 2 Securities and Unit 3 Derivatives SII exams within the next month or so. I picked up the study material today and am about to get cracking....
However from pevious experience it is always useful to get the advice of people that have walked the ground before you. I could follow the guidelines in the study material but I am wondering does anyone out there have any words of wisdom with regard to approaching these exams?

I got the study books from BPP - should I do the courses they run?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved...

Gavaus,

Is the Derivatives exam the same as the Registered Futures and Options Rep's exam?

If so, I just kept re-reading and doing the mock questions repeatedly until I was sick of the sight of it. But I passed the exam.

If you already have the basics, I don't think it's necessary to take the courses.

Grant,

not sure if they are the same - Its the SII Cert in Securities and Derivatives - the FSA requiremant for derivatives trading and advice...
Anyway I'm sure the're not dissimilar - I've found that doing the exam questions seems to be the best way to get the stuff to stay in your head!

Thanks for taking the time to repy...

Gav,

It seems the same, probably just a different name to what I knew it as.

The derivatives exam wasn't difficult, but the securites exam I had difficulty with (although passed it eventually). I think the problem with this one is that the material is so fkcuing boring. I ended up paying for private tuition for the accountancy aspect. Never again.

One month preparation doesn't seem very long for two exams, or is it a "combined" module? The original Registered Rep's exam for stockbroking covered options, whereas the Futures and Options Rep's exam was specifically to advise on derivatives for Futures/Options brokers.

However, the Fut/Opt Rep's exam also had a separate Regulation and Compliance paper (not difficult).

Good luck.

Hi, I am still at uni

i have the sii certificate in derivatives do you think i need to add securities too?

What about for inter dealer brokering

thanks in advance

Max,

Your short theta on the SII Derivatives cert (assuming they are one and the same as the old Futures and Options Rep's exam). Concentrate on getting a good degree then do more industry related study when you graduate - you may even get a firm to cough up the fees, etc.

Graduate in June, study for, and take, SII's in August, join firm in September.

Has anyone done their derivatives exam yet? I currently work for a securities broker and am looking to branch out into futures, as I trade them personally..
I have recently purchased the derivs book from SII, lot of material, is it possible to pass this exam without several mocks and test questions?

I went for 3 days course with BPP, I marginal failed the exam (60 and 65%) twice in June-July but without any slides or latest questions.
At the beginning of next week I'll seat the Derivatives exam so I'll let you know. Good night! Billy(y)

I am doing around 70% but after the course everything is easier...just read the book once and book a course with BPP (3 days course), they will give you slides and after course revision in the evening...after course give you max 1 week during you revise slides and do all mocks and latest questions (from BPP).
You have enough to pass but you have to pay £ 430 but good value of money. I'll let you know my result soon. Good luck! Billy

Thanks for your quick reply bro! Which course did you go through. How u finding the studying for unit 2 securities. I have jus graduated from university with a 1st Class Honours in Business. I have a potential job offer but its on the condition that I get my unit 2 and unit 8. Do you know where I can get access to past papers?

No problem...BPP course! I do not know about Unit 8 (Investment & Risk) but only few companies required that...you need that unit if you do pure advisory to RETAIL clients. You do not need for Institutions or general brokerage. Regarding material you can get Unit 8 through Distant Learning (study book, questions banks and tests on line) for only £ 166.88 (VAT included). Hope this helps...

Hi guys,

I have signed up to the CISI (SII) and I have recieved a textbook and some online learning materials for securites unit 2 exam with access to past questions on each element. I was wondering if anyone was with BPP or 7 City and we could exchange login details so tht we could access each others learning materials and past questions to give us the best chance of doing well. If so please reply to this thread and we can get in touch.

Thanks

Pazta
