problem with my desktop icons

hello all,
can anyone help.
As of last night half my desktop icons have turned into a white page with another square inside, instead of their normal appearance. An example would be the blue e for the internet explorer is now a white page. I can still click on the icon and it works ok.
Does anyone know how I can change it back to how it was.

start your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Normal mode. This will rebuild the iconcache.db file and should correct the problem.

That should do it in most cases but I have found out there are cases when you need to use "system restore".
