I'm sure this is a common problem...

when you have a full time job and have been trying to make trading work for you for a number of years, following the markets every day, demo trading, many blown accounts etc. there comes a point when you become SO obsessed with trading and the Goal to trade for a living, IT CAN BE DONE, you want to devote your whole time to this to make it work !....that you begin to lose interest in your work, lose motivation, become anti-establishment etc. Look at others in work and think they are all so sad as they are all working in the rat race, in jobs they don't like but they don't know the "secret" that the markets could unlock for them !!!

the danger is here that if you are not financially in a position to trade full time yet - you end up in a bad place, not doing a good job and also not trading . ie. just DREAMING !!!

anyone else find this ???

I can relate, actually.
I've been kind of obsessed with trading for about 7 years!
I haven't 'got it' yet and so, after all this time, have accepted that I probably never will.

Im not obsessed to the point that it affects my SOCIAL life though. I dont sit at home looking at charts instead of going out on a Saturday night and getting drunk and trying to pull pretty girls.

Although, when I am in employment (cant find anything at the moment), I spend the whole day at work thinking about the market, and how rubbish life is (in terms of having to spend all day, 5 days per week doing something that you hate!)

I'll probably never give up though....

The trouble is that 99% of people are not similarly obsessed and cannot understand your devotion. It seems such a waste of time to outsiders.

Should not give up the game but i'm more convinced than ever that it will forever remain a form a escapism for me, no different to a few drinks down the local. 13 years of trying an i don't seem to lose anymore over the longer term, but still cant imagine enough consistency for it to be sole income.

Not been there but I guess you would have to be careful that you don't end up losing your job as a lack of motivation in a job will generally lead to poor performance... unless you never had the motivation in the first place and it's something you can do without thinking about it.

No- mental discipline and a healthy interest in the rest of your life and social circle is required for most endeavours in life. You should seek help from a professional theraphist

depends if you're on the outside lokoing on, or vice versa.....

for many trading is just a well-paid full-time job....

I unfortunately agree with you 100% although I didn't take me years to become obsessed, more like 2 months. I think that one of the most important things in trading is taking time off so that u become obsessed with getting a piece of every move. Damn this obsession!!

its the dream. the thought of providing for yourself with no boss, no commute, no office politics. earning much more than is possible in other jobs..... Its just impossible for me to stop chasing it

Maybe you should change your goals and have your trading goal to make an extra income on top of your working life. At the moment your out look on life is not healthy.

If the day ever comes to trade full time, this will come as a bonus to you. The potential success you perceive you may be able to achieve as a trader may be a way for you to cope with your perceptions of failure in other walks of life.

If you cant do what you love, love what you do

The major problem with trading is the expectation of what it can do for you.
Most people come to trading expecting it to change their lives dramatically "Not going to happen"

But I can tell you what it can do for you
If you are a good disciplined trader you can make a very healthy income which will allow you to pursue your other goals in life.
without having to work 60 hour weeks.

Hi

I was keen to keen to get to grips with trading so I could do it full time, however the arrival of children seriously impacts your time and concentration , especially when trying to analyse markets, place and manage trades etc. Getting married to a long Lehman position didn't help the account much either

Now I just do a morning FX trade or an evening ES trade, targeting 20 pips a day and 100 pips a week. Focus is now on consistency and technique.

Finding I am achieving more success doing this without spending a lot of time doing it.

Keeps wife and kids happy as well

Cheers

Exactly!
This is what I am talking about
Not wanting to go too much into the financial semantics
20 pips a day is a brilliant achievable return and on a decent sized account trading 5 pounds would give you more than the average British wage.
20 points is very achievable

I hope you don’t mean this the way it reads.

A lot of people are happy enough in their personal life to put up with their job as means to an end, i.e. pay their mortgage. Lots of people could think of nothing worse than to have to rely on such an erratic income such as trading.

Reach for the stars,(sic itur ad astra) and if you only ever reach the clouds,..you've still achieved more than you would by just staring into space !
Never let mediocrity pull you down,...

Jason, it was a bit tongue & cheek....however, having worked in large companies now for over 10 years and seen the going on and what people have to do to progress annoys me !!! - maybe I am a rebel by nature and thats why I want to succeed at trading so much

This unrealistic view point can lead to poor trading too, such as unrealistic profit targets, over trading etc.

"unrealistic profit targets and over trading"

Are mere perspectives,...there are many styles of trading, each incorporating their own personality !

For my personal style I know in the past I shot myself in the foot by being unrealistic and greedy in trades, wanting more pips out of a trade than the market will reasonably give, just to see the market go back against me.

For my personal style I know I have over traded in greed and or revenge trading.
