Next Big Thing

Internet Tv..and all related parties.

traditional televsion is doomed. the days of the licence fee and advertising revenue are over..

in 20-30 years time, everyone will have an integrated tv/pc/sound system.. not too disimilar to the way mobile phones are now, but on a much grander scale, and with reduced bandwidth charges

shows will be on a subscription basis, which should improve overall quality somewhat..

long term, Google is still, in my opinion one of the better shares to purchase.. they frankly "own" the internet, and seem open to exploring new media opportunites.. eg their purchase of YouTube..

Thanks FC now we're off the mark...... as it were ..... we can get this show on the road!

How about Nanotech ? I can quite easily see this area getting sexy in the next year or so.. but my timing might be out ..

If it does start getting SEXY then many of the nano stox will go crazy...... Moreover quite a few are in the basement never mind the ground floor. You guys remember the bubble when all a company had to do was whisper "internet" to go on a flyer..... The same might happen to nano...

Uk stock

The big benefit is ...... with existing stocks already on the market you won't have to pay silly ipo prices ...... when the time comes.

Keep the ideas coming

The next big thing according to Richard Farleigh (off Dragon's Den) is going to be companies developing "Green" products that help save the planet's valuable resources.

It will be interesting to see what the next big actually is.

Thanks

Hello Again

Farleigh's a smart fella.... early bird on the tech craze. It helps if you understand bubbles are probably one of the greatest wealth creation mechanisms on the planet...

Anyway interestingly he's got a stake in a Web TV company fitting in with Fc's earlier comment.
GREEN is good ...... so Farleigh and I agree on that too .... you may have read my comments on the Climate Exchange on another soapbox elsewhere on the board.

Despite the rising hype at present .... GREEN theme it hasn't really gripped the imagination of most investors .. so plenty of time......

I note with interest Uk's Nigel Wray (erstwhile smart investor) is chairman of Greenhouse Fund (GHF) - a UK fund to invest in Environment Technologies.... Why a player like Wray is involved in such a tiny fund ~ 20mill ... could become clearer in future.... reminds me of the days of the internet "incubators" .... :cheesy:

Interesting topic, I note the BBC have given the go ahead to allow live streaming of their TV content, according to Radio 4, last night (or was it the night before?) anyhow, also note that film makers are making movies to or that are playable on Mobile phones.

So you know ol dom jolly and the size of his gordon gekko nokia phone "Ello just at the theatre, NO It's Rubbish" (Ive still got mine) I reckon we could be seeing huge screen mobiles , complete with a Pint, popcorn and kebab holder.

Phones by Lout , thats Lager my son.

What about these eco fuels, corn oil and stuff it's a completion of a circle perhaps whereby mankind are being directed, and quite rightly so in my opinion , to becoming nations of farmers again. Which is good for man and the planet, providing they dont bugger about with geneitc mutations of the crops too much. "God damn ,its a one hundred and fifty foot high corn forest. "

Cloning of human body parts seems the next to become normal.

Space holiday travel ,whats happening ot that ?

One of the founders of Google, has built and tested an early single-stage private rocket.
(it only flew up a few hunfred metres, and then back to a controlled landing, but its a start)

Some rich hotelier recently paid for a scale-model of a self-inflating module into earth orbit to test feasibility of building an orbital hotel.

And NASA has started pushing money into the Orion spacecraft. (glad they have backed out of the space shuttle dead-end) Admittedly old-style route to space, but cheaper, and safer. And more flights as well. And larger crews.

Google for "space daily" website, for latest space and satellite innovations news.

The other day, I visited a gambling casino -- something that i'm not usually very inclined to do. I'm the type of person who will walk into a casino with $100 and leave with $90. If there is an opposite to a gambler, i'm probably one of the closest things to it. I generally veer sharply away from gambling of any sort unless I know that the odds are in some way in my favor.

When I entered the casino, I was immediately taken aback by the amount of grey and white in every niche and cranny of the place. Grey and white hair, that is. If I had to make an estimate, i'd have said that over 90% of the people in the casino (at least 200) were over the age of 60. It seems that gambling has become quite a popular passtime for the retirement money of the baby boomers. With a large percentage of the country's population nearing retirement age now, perhaps casinos will soon see quite a boost in earnings. Could gambling become one of the next big things in the coming years?

Thanks MarkSA - amazing observation ........will investigate

I've also begun to realise that on this side of the pond .... we're getting the taste for "homeland security".
There seems to be growing expenditure in this area ... particularly surveillance ..... all part of the war on terror I suppose.

Edit: I'll go even further........ "homeland security" has now become one of my key investment themes for the next few years........... :cheesy:

Mobile Banking

Apparently UK company Morse Group (MOR)~ 100p
want to be the global leader in banking by mobile phone....
Should be an interesting trend to watch... they are already doing deals with banks and mobile operators....

Recently announced a tie-up with Rbs....

Another uk company netplay tv (npt) also hold one of the partner companies in new mobile banking consortium... Mchex... so that may be worth watching to see what they do with it since it does not fit neatly with internet tv and gaming - their core business!

Old Sean - Thanks for memory jogger :cheesy:

WiMAX

Wimax is rumoured to be "one" of the next big things...

From what I can gather it will offer very high speed wireless broadband across large areas possibly within a 10mile radius of the "hotspot" or antenna.. which is like Wifi on steriods...
As you probably know WiMax is being trialed at cities in UK and already established in quite a few cities around the globe.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/03pipex_wimax

There are quite a few fledgeling wimax related companies lised in both in Uk and US...
could be a trend to watch .....? Thankfully the hype has not really started!

Hello, can I have a big mac and fries please...

I am surprised their website does not mention control of disgruntled population which is by far the best use of it. Hopefully they make one that can remotely inject sedatives or give electric shocks to the gonads.

hmm, scary stuff, o.k so my dogs got a chip in his neck for id, in case he gets lost etc and handed in, but chipping old people ? lol

OK armed forces pesronel chipped for gps tracking , hmm maybe but sats can zoom in , maybe its good for military strategists TV viewing of their froces to track them but.....

apparently on the conspiracy thread some chap mentioned chipping was on the agenda from the New World Order on populations... how will it benfit them though? unless it just gives them pure control hard on's or something.

here we go , an extension of keeping prsioners in their own homes, already being tagged but the Gov. recently said, keep more criminals out of the jails. why not chip them ?

AFRICA
Watching the movement of capital the last few months and listening to the global leaders i.e Paulson, world bank, imf it looks like the lads have set their sights on Africa...............

It's not common knowledge yet.... but I believe we will start to hear more about the industrialisation of Africa.........just as we hear about China & India now....

In UK Lonrho (Lonr) is an interesting way to play the theme ....now around 29p after falling off 50p high. They are investing in industrial assets across Africa.... and maybe worth a look.

Could they come back from their old days of glory? They lost money last year -4.87 EPS

I think they are relying on their heritage to do sweetheart deals across the continent..

Not sure on the real reason for the loss but if you believe things are changing a falling price is the ideal situation to benefit from the next upwave.
