Hi

I have just switched from Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. So far I think that the Mozilla products are better than the Microsoft alternatives that I have always used upontil now.

One "problem" i have encounted with Firefox is that - wiith IE6 - if i did a google seach for example - I could delete the words i searched for by clicking in the text box, and pressing delete. This does not work with Firefox. How can i get rid of the words that I've searched for with Firefox?

Many thanks

Firefox rulz :)

Double click in the search box to highlight the text, then type over it.

Thanks frugi

I've just tried your suggestion, and it added a new word/phrase that i typed into the google search box - rather than cancelled out the previous words/phrases.

Hi

installed the Mozilla Suite - thinking it would give me Firefox 1.0, Thunderbird and a few addes bonuses. instead it has installed Mozilla 1.7 as the webbrowser and the email client is again called Mozilla - not Thunderbird 1.0.

What are the differences between Mozilla Suite and Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0?

Cheers

frugi - Oh dear. Try 3 fast clicks?

Hi

this makes no difference at my end. This just adds another word/phrase to the search text box, rather than deletes any words/phrases.

The solution i have found in Firefox 1.0 is - Tools - Options - Saved form information - click on + sign - untick box "Save information i enter in web page forms and the search bar". Or, to be able to save the information you enter in web pages and the search bar, but clear it when you want - under the Saved form information + sign - click on "clear".

That's interesting because I find I cannot do this with IE6, my old searches are alwyas there.

I've stopped using Firefox because it was taking up 20% or more of my system resources, just in idle. A real hog.

I've been using FIreFox and Thunderbird for a long time now. No complaints at all. I really like that they aren't as tightly integrated with the OS as IE is. If I have to use windows, then I will try my darnest to NOT use IE.

Using tabbed browsing with Firefox 1.0

Hi

I like the fact that Firefox 1.0 enables users to view more than one web page within one web browser - by enabling you to add "tabs" to the web browser - freeing up space on your desktop.

Hi jtrader,

Firefox has always been able to do that. It even did it before it was called FireFox way back in the days of being called Phoenix, then FireBird, and now finally.....well you know the rest.

I've had a bit of a play with Firefox and Thunderbird. Experience to date:
  • Firefox is much slower than IE - this may not be an issue on fast machines (and when I eventually get my new machine set up (see Techie corner for tale of woe around that), it might not matter to me, but at the moment it's annoyingly slow - I can see all the images render 1 by 1, and it takes an absolute age to open
  • You don't seem to be able to move the toolbars in Firefox, I'm used to the back button being to the right of the address bar, and that's where I want it - doesn't seem possible to move it
  • I generally prefer the UI for Thunderbird to my current Eudora (particuarly as I loathe the Eudora double-click to open mailbox, which opens another MDI child window), but it doesn't seem to support multiple accounts? Can anyone confirm/deny whether this is true - this is essential for me
So far, it's a qualified

Interesting zzaxx99, I have found FireFox to be a lot faster, but have not carried out actual measurements.

On the toolbar issue, right click on the toolbar and select Customize on the popup menu. Then drag off the toolbar button you want to move, this will create it on the Customize Toolbar dialog, then redrag the button from the dialog back to the toolbar in the position you want.

Also for folks who need to run IE now and again for banking sites and others which do not work with FF, get hold of the "View in IE" plugin which is neat. I also love the Bug Me Not plugin which allows you to pick up a username and password for sites which require registration,

Thanks for that, much better. FWIW, you don't have to drag the icons off the bar / to the customise page; once the customise page is open, you can drag them to new positions on the bar. Have to say, none of this was at all obvious.

Have you found any way to shrink the URL box? I find it far too big, and want to have the back button roughly centred on the page.
