Mac vs PC

Your only mistake was the OS.

I love PCs (have disliked MACs since I owned a LISA).

But keep control (why I hate macs) so use XP, use Acronis, don't use anything you don't understand. I spend an hour completely rebuilding my PC ever month so its 100% under my control and runs like a scalded cat :)
 
Are Macs really that good? And why no viruses? There's a challenge for virus writers everywhere, surely?

we've got both...

Mac book crashed after one year (conveniently just after the warranty had expired) ..needed a new hard drive (mac said "one of those things") also battery dead after one year.

Laptop (acer) has run fine for 2 years - suddenly died yesterday!

Also 2 desktops (one new and one 7 years old) still runing tho the old one needs a lot of maintenance for trouble free operation.

Personally I like MACS and put the MAcbook experience down as "a bad egg"

However MACS are also much more expensive than PC of similar power and spec...
plus there's the software issue - once you have had PC's and change to MAC you have to reinvest in new software - adding to costs.

Like any "niche" producer MAC now becoming more popular oustide the "creative" group it has attracted in past - and most components now made in China - I think they "assemble in the USA"..so I guess reliablility is dependent on that...

Im actually looking for a new laptop and asked my neighbour who works in the computer software side of the industry. He tells me to get a Mac as they can now run a Microsoft operating system as well as the Mac system so you can just switch between the two.

Never headr of that before. Still dont think i'll be buying a Mac though.:whistling
 
PCs for me!

PC Pro mag did a comparison PC vs Mac last April. Can't find a printed version but the podacast is here: PC Pro: News: Hot Topics: Download the new PC Pro podcast today! As far as i can remember the PC advantages well outweighed the Mac.

As far as I'm concerned, the main reasons for buying a Mac are:
1. It's a cult thing
2. You don't like Bill Gates
3. You've got loads of money & like fashion items
4. You don't expect it to go wrong and have to fix it yourself
5. You like having a limited range of software.
6. You're an artist /graphic designer where "trade rules" insist on Macs

I've got PCs - dead cheap and no problems!
 
PC and Mircosoft operating system.......all that free software......well tried and tested, reliable easy to fix, upgrade, replace, compatability.........its really is good stuff
finally a huge % of the world runs on it.....

Y'see, I don't get this. This same conversation is going on at another forum I use. The Mac users started getting a bit emotional so I decided not to bother.

If I have a Vauxhall Vectra and can install a Ford Mondeo bodykit and engine... why not get a Ford Mondeo in the first place?
 
I'm on a Mac, have been about 2 years now I think, and, boy am I happy !!!

I don't know what it is with PC's and me, but they were constantly freezing up, crashing or otherwise totally messing up on me, not being very computer savvy I always had to call up one of those PC Doctor services, and at some point I started thinking that there is something wrong if one knows the phone number of such a service by heart and the girl picking up the phone recognizes you by voice, lol, stuff like that just never happens any more with my Mac, no freezing, no lost data, no nothing.

One doesn't even notice it's there any more practically.

Can totally recommend Apple !

Ninja, one drawdown to Macs is that some stuff doesn't run on them.

Hence the option to switch between Apples operating system and Microsofts, now everything that you could previously only get to run with a PC can now run on a Mac too.
 
i have both....

both laptops, the mac is the one i like and the pc is a necessity really due to the fact that the majority of programs particularly trading related ones are made for them.

the pc works well for what it does, i only use it for trading everything else i use the mac.:)

i tried to use the parallels for mac to enable pc programs to run on it but found it prohibitive and clumsy...plus 2 screens are better than one!

oh and the price difference!...mac £1200 pc £ 350.00 :sneaky:
 
i currently have three macs, one new imac and two ibooks and i love them. never had problems since years. for trading i use windows xp with parallels on the imac, i have metatrader running 24/7 and it´s just perfect.
 
I started with PCs way back in about 1982 (before Windows!). In those days everything was done from a DOS prompt. So I feel fairly well qualified to answer this question. I still work with PCs every day, but at home... I have a Mac and would NEVER EVER go back to a PC.

A computer professional friend of mine says, "Thank god for Windows PCs - they keep those of us who fix computers for a living in business. If the world ran on Macs we'd be bankrupt in no time!" QED

To me a Mac just does what it's supposed to do and does it well. Here's a small example: With a Windows machine you want to remove a program. You go to the start menu, open 'control box', go to 'add/remove programs' wait for the '...list to populate' then click remove. And then very often you get an error message saying that 'Windows could not remove all of the components' and that the rest will have to be done manually'! How pants is that? With a Mac you just grab the program icon and drag it to the trash - program gone! I could give many other similar examples but I don't want to bore everyone to death.

Regarding viruses - the Mac as I understand it is essentially a UNIX based system (like Linux) and the way the system is constructed means that each element is isolated so that a virus can't spread within a single Mac, never mind to other machines. Maybe someone with a better tech-head than me can explain that properly. :)

Anyway, just my 2 cents...

I'd expect the Advertising Manager to love MACs. Rossored, you're in the niche.

Their reliability thing is an old issue. It was true with Millenium but under XP I haven't seen a blue screen for years - seems to require hardware problems or some really ugly software now (stay off the porn sites guys!)

Brutusdog has it nailed. If you must love a mac, then you'll pay the price for your proprietary whoring.

I hear where you're coming from, but I must say that I didn't actually think either my iMac or the wife's Macbook were that expensive in comparison. The iMac is the 24" daddy and at the time it was £1349, but the spec of it in comparison to 'mainstream' PC's was much better, and it comes loaded with just about all the software you need. Again, Macbook was £749 I think, and you can easily spend that amount of money on a decent laptop. A few years ago the gap was wider and Apple have actually reduced the price of the 24" iMac by about £200 recently (and upped the spec) so I think price is becoming less of an issue; whether that's Apple becoming more cost-aware and wanting to increase market share or not I don't know but when I change this system in just over a year, I'll certainly be buying another. I have access to a bunch of XP based machines in my office but they just never get used. Likewise, the iMac has got Vista installed on it, but it never gets run (partly because it takes about 6 months for it to finish booting).

Each to their own, but I think the Macs are being adopted by more people as they come to realise the advantages.

That is SO true...

I am really pretty clueless about software etc, but a MAc is SO simple and totally intuitive that even I have never ever had to check the manual, lol.

Quite simply, it's so well thought out, user friendly and elegant that questions just do not arise.
 
The only thing that really p!sses me off is that all of the trading software I've found is Windows based! The only option I'm left with is to use a web based system and the ones I've seen aren't that good. Hopefully someone someday soon will wake up to the fact that there are an increasing number of Mac users out here who could profitably be catered for, but until then I guess we'll just have to put up with Windoze and it's bloody viruses for our trading... Sorry, rant over... :)
 
Why are there no viruses for Mac? Virus writers just the sort who hate Macs? I've learnt in life that nothing is perfect...

And why are PCs so popular? It's not like you can't buy Macs in every shop selling PCs (Dixons, John Lewis, Harrods...)?
