Luck.

As a general rule of thumb, in trading, do you feel that you get -

1. The markets give you "the rub of the green" (good luck)
2. The markets treat you faily (neither lucky or unlucky)
3. The markets seem to punish you at every opportunity. The gods are conspiring against you (the unluckiest swine alive).

Gary Player once said, "the more I practice the luckier I get."

The above statements are removing all responsibility from the trader and worse still turning the market into some kind of entity that has a personal interest in them.

This kind of subjective thinking is fatal for any trader IMO.

I tried logging back in today & the mods hadn't banned my ass as had been instructed. And then i had a few ideas to run with.

Ive probably had a thread like this b4, losing my marbles now. II know the politically correct line is that you make your own muck, there is no such thing as luck etc, and that is true. But i'm trying to get at what people feel deep down. Perhaps i am just a big self indulgent, cry baby

J, if you want to hear what I really really believe deep down, it is that everything that happens to me in my life is caused by myself, both positive and negative, that every reaction I experience is a result of an action of mine, that I am totally responsible for my universe and everything that happens in it.

Of course I get angry and upset when things go wrong, but I try and get back on track again as quickly as possible by realising that first of all it was my responsibility in the first place, and that my being angry doesn't improve things, my anger will simply create yet more bad karma for myself.

Of course I'm not saying that its always easy or that I can always do it at the flicking of my fingers, but at least thats the ideal I strive for.

I agree with Livermore. It's amazing the number of times that something comes out the blue and moves the market the way it was going. So provided you are in the right way then this sort of luck usually works for you.

Thats a good approach to life in general. Personal liability for everything. Stops you feeling sorry for yourself, feeling hard done by, blaming external influences etc. Taking responsibility for oneself, not being the victim etc.

In this belief system, where would being hit by a bus, or in a plane crash fit in? wrong place at the wrong time?

Cheers.

Well thats where I'll probably lose most, but yup, I believe I bring that on myself as well.

Thoughts are Things is a concept I totally believe in that for me is definitely a two way street, ie I am responsible for all the good, BUT also all the bad that happens to me.

Call it karma or whatever, the way I see it is that everybody lives in their own little personal parallel universe, and that everything that happens there is down to you alone.
;)

I'd guess you made the choice to walk in front of the bus / get on the plane........

Harsh, but true.

Some people love punishment & taking the blame for things .

But this is more about making your personal responsibility belief system work beneficially for you isnt it!

Well for every winner there is a loser. Is that the same with luck? If not, is there a big pool of luck somewhere waiting to be tapped?

Luck is a figment of your imagination.

Luck is no figment of imagination. Most things in life are embellished by it, either good or bad. To get lucky , you have to be in the right place at the right time. To be unlucky you need to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. So you need to be a bit quick on the uptake to get it right.

As the man said "The more I practice, the more lucky I seem to get".

The first step would be to become quick at spotting opportunities.

Dick, yup, everything.

If I believe that I am responsible for the good I can't decline responsibility for the bad.

;)

But I also believe that things around me aren't real, what I witness just goes on in my universe.

For years parallel universes were a staple of the Twilight Zone. Science fiction writers loved to speculate on the possible other universes which might exist. In one, they said, Elvis Presley might still be alive or in another the British Empire might still be going strong. Serious scientists dismissed all this speculation as absurd. But now it seems the speculation wasn't absurd enough. Parallel universes really do exist and they are much stranger than even the science fiction writers dared to imagine.

Basically the way I see it is that we are just here to learn to overcome our fears, and get a move on with achieving in the face of adversity whatever we set as our objectives.

I think my psychology has been too workmanlike. At least i feel the pain & promise of each tick back & forth. Generally too ready to throw the toys out of the pram, or the baby out with the bathwater. Too attached with the need to be proved right, and too emotional when i am wrong.

Maybe this is also a British trait.

Maybe in Europe the trend is to have a calmer, logical & more detached approach to things. This would serve well in trading.

Hell, i know this is the case when it comes to the human body. Did you know that in for example german health clubs, men & women sauna, steam room & jacuzzi together - Naked!!

I don't like thinking about own personal luck or bad luck, it can drive you insane. As for market luck, i don't think about that either, although you can be lucky, like selling an unknown event such as an earthquake (see Livermore). In general, trading wise, if you start analyising luck more than the trade or market then you probably should stop and have a rethink about what you are actually doing. This post is not aimed at anyone in particular, just a general comment.
