London from above, at night

With the end of the Olympics in Beijing, all eyes turned for a moment to London, site of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. While looking for good photographs of London, I was contacted by London photographer Jason Hawkes, who had some wonderful images of London, seen from above at night (from a helicopter, to be exact) - some of which which he's agreed to let me share here. From Jason: "Shooting aerial photography during the daytime had its own difficulties, you are strapped tightly into a harness leaning out of the helicopter, shouting directions through the headsets to the pilot. If shooting in the day can be difficult, night and the lack of light causes its own set of problems, but overcoming them is half the fun and the results can be stunning. I shoot at night using the very latest digital cameras, mounted on either one or two gyro stablazied mounts, depending on the format of the camera and length of lens I'm having to use."

Such a pretty picture from above, yet if you zoom in a little, a murkier picture emerges. you will see -

knife and gun carrying child gangs
Drug dealers
Prostitutes
pimps
homeless nohopers
illiegal aliens
robbers

I was going to find articles about the rest of the topics you mentioned but reading that list in the link and seeing the faces, I got distracted. A couple of them were 14 years old. I don't remember my teenage years being so dark.

It must say an awful lot about the age we live in.

The end of days.

At the risk of turning it into a debate about knife crime, I think it is due to the breakdown of the family unit. Highly impressionable youngsters turn to gangs for the feeling of belonging. Possibly the result of both parents having* to work ("latchkey kids"). I say this as a 30-something single guy who lives the bachelor life before anyone accuses me of being a pensioner with a highly traditional lifestyle.

*-I say "having" because we all know how expensive modern day living is, so it may be unreasonable for (typically) the mother to stay at home if the father is on an average salary.

UK is just too lenient on criminals. No deterrant. :(

The sacred geometry and associated "monuments" are clearly seen. ;)

Is crime really much worse now or are you joining the cliched crap about the world coming to an end due to knife crime? I will be surprised if this is the worst time ever like some Daily Mail reading plonkers keep on telling us.

I'm talking about the increase in deaths amongst the youths, not crime in general, which is clear from what I've written.

I'm going to not spend time Photoshopping her face onto a picture of Supergirl out of respect. :D

I reckon the UK is a great country. There are too many moaners everywhere. People need to chill.

Awesome pictures. We are all very lucky to live in Britian. It may be worth remembering that from time to time.
