indice stats and percentages

Hi All.

So I get that indices and indexes are the same thing.
No, can someone please explain it to me, in a normal language that everyone can understand. I read whats online and my head started spinning.

There's some fancy arithmetic involved but going up means lots of people have been buying those shares. Going down means they've been selling.

Knowing more and more doesn't mean trading better and better. What you need to do should drive what you need to know to help you do it well. What are you trying to do?
