On this point, I can vaguely remember some documentary about a tribe in the Amazon who had no sense of personal ownership. They regarded the various tools/items around them as being available for the use of whoever needed them at the time.

I am not necessarily advocating this as an attitude we should adopt, just pointing out that it can work as an efficient system without chaos ensuing.

I suspect the vulnerable and insecure ego is at the root of our modern obsession with property. In the absence of the old tribal structures, we try to feel more secure by endless accumulation. It is as if it somehow makes us feel more substantial if we can grab loads of 'stuff'.

That's true. I suppose it becomes interesting where you have a scarce resource which is not in sufficient supply to satisfy the needs of an entire population, and in that case does anybody really have the right to own that resource.
