I’m often asked this question, and it varies for me, but ideally, sufficient time to truly consider what is happening in the markets I’m interested in trading. For me charts study is a part of my self-control and self-discipline efforts.
Confidence comes from the self-disciplinary aspect of doing little things consistently right. I believe that when traders do their chart work every night and perform price action analysis accurately, they will begin to make the right trade decisions on a regular basis. Whenever I have failed to follow a regular routine of chart observation and study, my, trading results have suffered. Each trader should have a special work space where he analyzes markets for thirty minutes every day, possibly including Sunday evening if trading on Monday is contemplated. Such study should be without any disturbances allowed. Even if a trader just looks at charts for markets he does not trade in order to gain perspective, this time should be allocated for regular study. I have noticed that the greats in every field engage in regular practice. I can remember seeing a documentary on TV about Arthur Rubenstein the great pianist. They showed that this man practiced uninterrupted for 2-3 hours every single day. Taking a hint from the greats, I have incorporated regular chart study into the routine of my life.
