Hello chaps (and ladies),

24-year old recent maths graduate, currently working 9-5 while demo trading and building capital in order to fulfil my dream since I was 17 of trading the markets. Primarily interested in trading commodities and currencies, particularly those that correlate as it benefits me to engage in TA whilst following fundamentals and keeping abreast of the industry on a daily basis. Also interested in DJIA futures, bnaimy's posts on the topic have been particularly enlightening, as I'm sure they've been to a good many people.

I'm a vacuum for knowledge, have found T2W very useful in the past few months since discovering it, in terms of poster's knowledge and recommended books and articles. I look forward to chatting to a few of you, and I'm sure learning a lot from those in the know.

I did maths, too. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference in retail trading. The only maths I use is adding and subtracting to work out stops and targets.

Yeah ha I have realised that, traders don't particularly need to know how lines on their charts are calculated, merely how to interpret them. I don't think maths puts me ahead of the game in any way, just wanted to tell you all a bit about myself

Although, speaking of the degree, I am currently writing an article called 'Luck and the Pitfalls of Probability', which may or may not have a bit of maths behind it. I'll post it in one of the other forums, if anyone wants to read it and tell me how **** it is that would be nice.

I've done half a maths degree, does that count for anything? (hope to finish it one day).

The most applicable part of mathematics to trading has got to be probability & statistics. Very useful when consider risk:reward, money management, etc.

Yes, that's the only relevant bit. Doesn't really need a degree. I did study at Warwick University under Dr Ian Stewart and studied chaos theory and catastrophe theory. And so what!

Yeah maths degrees are very tough, especially when compared with some of the more arts-based subjects - The workload I had compared to some of my friends was mind-boggling at times. If you plan on trading for a living, as ninja says, a degree means precisely the square root of nothing

Ninja I did my dissertation on continuing fractions, there was a large section in that based on chaos theory and how CFE's can be used to model chaotic systems. Fascinating stuff (cough)!

Don't worry SL, while complex maths and stats may not be the most useful for discretionary trading, there are loads of Hedgies and Banks setting up algo desks (well, at least there was until recently). They look for bright quant people to find and exploit statistical anomalies and get a small positive expectation for doing high frequency trading. Your maths degree isn't a waste but you may need to do a masters or Phd in financial stats or econometrics to be competitive. Oh, some C++, Matlab and SQL will help too if you want to get into that area.
