Green dots

Everytime I write a post, these days, it seems that I accummulate more of those little green dots. That is not my intention, although I appreciate the good will. In fact, the good will is all I need.

Therefore, I am asking the mods to delete all mine. IF people see my name and read my posts that is all the merit I need, not a row of "campaign medals".

Simply for saying "sorry" to a poster has awarded me with five accolades. That is quite ridiculous and takes away all meaning to the idea of awarding marks for good posts. Frankly, it makes me feel like a pompous ******* and I am sure that a lot of posters get that impression, too

Please, don't anyone answer this post----for good or bad! Just get rid of those damned dots!

Perhaps, Splitlink, your classy display stood in stark contrast to the unfortunate recent prevailing tenor of the site and some observers decided to click a button because we can't shake your hand or give you a nod as we would in RL.

wot no pips

mods can't do that Split, if you really don't want them you can message admin, they can empty the tank for you. They will build up again as I don't believe they can switch it off completely for you, CYOF is the only one I can recall ever getting the snip.

we'll have to call you jaffa lol

For a lot of people it's their security blanket. Doesn't mean to say that they have progressed in their trading ability in the time that it's taken to accrue the dots though.

I got a few for some posts in the jokes section! It probably made me worse off that day as I wasn't concentrating on the trading screen! But hey I got another green dot. I'll feel really special when I get some gold ones though. Must be coining it in, all those with the gold ones?!

Priceman,

You clearly have benefited from the dots by learning a little more about yourself

I just use em to say a few words to a poster

I give em out like smarties :)

Trading opportunity ?

They do it for carbon don't they. Now why don't we start an internal T2W market for green dots? This could be a training facility for Newbie traders to learn the rigours of a volatile market, practice in up-till-now illiquid assets and acquire credit for posts they never made. It opens up all sorts of possibilities for futures and new types of TA indicators - green /dark green & amber. Best of all, those naughty SpreadBet Co.s who only reward those who know how to play the system , won't be able to get involved! (y)

Yes the T2W rep levels are growing thick/fast now. 2 months ago, the person at the top of the top ten typically had about 400 T2W pips. Nowadays top spot is around 2000 T2W pips.
As all members pip power grows, I can foresee a stage where a member gets a new dot for every one or 2 approvals. Its kind of like an avalanche effect.......in another 6 months, perhaps the top of the top ten for the week will have 5000 T2W pips for the weeking - over 6 yellow dots.

I agree with Split Link though, as it can all become pretty meaningless. Its stands to reason that people will delibaretly "pip" the people with lots of reps, in the hope of gaining some "easy pips" in return.

Another trading website that i have recently signed up to has perhaps a better, less flashy rep system, that simply tells you how many times a member has been thanked by other members, and in how many of their posts they have been thanked. No flashy green/tellow dots & stars etc. therefore IMO this system is less likely to attract "pip hunting" so to speak....

Basically i think the green dots may devalue T2W, as some members may subconsciously start using T2W with the major motive of gaining green dots by making a good joke etc., rather than contributing quality trading related info etc....

It was a novelty at first, but now it is something i am fairly tired of, due largely to the fact that in the main T2W is a community of a ltd number of people, thus the reps are being given/received time after time to and from the same people.

Well, I can't get rid of those dots without deleting the posts. I feel sorry to do that so I am going to request that I don't get any more until the significance of them is given more meaning. At present, as Andy says, they are dished out like Smarties!

Some would say the green dots are an slightly insulting incentive to post on an "adult" forum, designed to mesmerise....

I tyhink the cocept of a "rep" is a good one. But perhaps the flashy nature of the dots brings the integrity of the giving & receiving process into question....but still, its all only a bit of fun, if someone doesn't like them, stop giving other people rep, and u can be fairly sure that the rep u receive will to some extent dry up!

Deleting posts doesn't get rid of rep points. You just get a N/A alongside the attribution as I discovered a few days back.

I believe there are two kind of 'reps' being dealt out. The ones where people actually appreciate your post and like the idea of it, like the ones I got for starting the "All you need is ... a chart thread", for example for this post.

On the other hand, there's the 'friend' effect where someone will re-pip someone else because he or she said something directed at someone else where he happens to agree with. For example posts #27 and #28 here.

I don't believe that changing the system into "thank you's" would actually change that a lot.

To be honest, some charts and analysis I put most of my time and hard work in - and which I believe are actually quite informative, have on average received much lesser points than I would've expected to. The posts where I tried to help newbies were mostly lleft unanswered. But posts where you challenge some one else or get argumentative seem far more popular. Perhaps it's the spirit of T2W lately. Just look at the latest reps dealt out here.

Talking of helping newbies, how many of the "experienced members" actually made the effort to post something in the 'Trading FAQ' section Sharky created, over a month ago? I answered in almost every thread, in part because I felt it was my duty to do so. There are a lot of good, sensible traders here who's answers would help point newbies in the right direction. The fact that only a handful of people took the effort to say something, is a reflection of the mentality that is ruling T2W lately. :(

No i dont either actually :). In peoples mind, they'd still associate thanked/thankyou etc. with green dots - just a different presentation structure. It would still bring the same issues.

However, one advantage of the "thanked" syhstem is that it treats all members equally. There's no "rep power" etc.

By the way...

... all of this has been discussed before.

At that time I suggested that we change what comes on the front page.

Instead of showing the member with the most number of reputations in the latest couple of days, show us the posts with the most number of reputations attributed to it. At least that way people would be attracted to the message, not the messenger.

I've also suggested that instead of the most view threads, the highest 'quality' threads are displayed on the front page. So far there's no other means than using reputations points to measure that. But it would already help getting the attention to some more interesting threads, instead of slanging matches.

Oh and yes, I know I have a lot green and golden dots, but I've made +5000 posts after all, so speaking of reps/post it doesn't mean all that much.

Smartie people are Happy people

Don"t see it matters

We all know its total BS

Hello split. I did suggest that T2W could perhaps award its members with an exchange system. What I mean is, you could cash in your dots/points for perhaps T2W paraphernalia . Like 1500 for a T2W retail traders dressing gown perhaps or a T2W coffee mug for 300 ?

Now i thought that would be a good idea, sadly the members who add value ,literally, are often just left in the rain . LOL well for 1000 you get the Logo'd T2W golfing brolly !

Do you feel me ? well for 1200 what about those leather driving gloves providing cushioned feedback to whatever the wearers feeling ?huh ,huh ?

Ya know split how do you feel with an exchange for AIR MILES ? should we make it a reality ?

WHAT IF ?

Come on. YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!

 I wanna laugh, but, sorry u just don't do it for me :( but as long as u make yourself laugh, thats the main thing ;)!

But the point u make is a good one. All this rep power, top 10 leaderboard, no. dots, etc. does is distract from what we are all supposed to be here from - learn about trading. In the supermarket I'd rather a discounted price than bloody "reward points", as this is another detail/distraction that i need to be aware of. The rep. system is not quite the same, but it is a similar distraction.
