Fluid in the ear

Has anyone here ever had it? I thought my ear was blocked with wax so for the past week I have been using olive oil without any success. So today I visited an NHS walk in and the nurse looked inside my ear and told me there was NO WAX but there is fluid in the ear..:-0🙁

My wife had the same problem I think. It turned out she has vertigo. There is a vain behind the ear that has trapped some water and will not drain. Her ear feel like sometimes it is stopped up and buzzes sometimes. She noticed it one day while driving down the road and got a little dizzy. The doctor said it is manageable but no cure. She had to go to a No or Low salt diet. Does this sound like what you are asking about?

Not really, I don't have vertigo and I was not put on a special diet. There is no pain at all but my ear feels 'full', sort of like the way it feels after you've been swimming. I did a search on 'The Internet' and it seems to be something kids usually get.

That is what my wife experianced at the start of it all several weeks before. I also hope it does not develope into anything major. I hope after a couple of days it works itself out.

So do I, although the nurse said it could take 3 weeks. If not I need to see a GP and be referred to a specialist...🙁

Do you go out to loud places/clubs/raves a lot? I know that if you do this a lot you can get titnus and apparently one of the symptoms is this.
I hear having is not cool.

My wife finally had to go to a nose, ear and throat doctor and they ran a test.
She did find on the internet a regamen she is fallowing with some natural earbs and vitamins. So if she stayes on low salt that seames to be working pretty well.
Another thing, some one last week told us they went to a Chiropractor and that fixed up the problem they had with the ear.
One other thing, We have not tried this as of this post but have you ever heard of ear candles? We purchased a couple at a health food store and are going to try them. I have heard people who use them think they are great. They are made especially for the ear to help pull stuff that is deep down in your ear out. We have never used them, but we plan to try pretty soon. That may also help.
I hope I was of some help. My first thing to try would be to cut down on salt.

I actually don't add salt to my food and watch the guidlines on products I buy, so I think I can rule out salt....unless that is what is in me ear!

The possible causes mentioned were:

1) Loud environment as DCStoxx suggested but I haven't been around anything loud for a long time.

2) Recent illness (Cold, Flu) - I suffered the flu in November last year so it's a bit of a delayed reaction if that is the cause

3) Ear infection from swimming - I got a very bad ear infection from the local pool but this was about 1 year ago at least.

4) Flying - Highly possible because I took a long haul flight early this year and a short haul flight about 1 month ago. But flying has never caused a problem before.

All of their problems seem to have been caused initially by being given the wrong diagnosis and treatment.

Banish these thoughts from your mind as soon as they enter otherwise you will end up a nervous wreck! It's pointless speculating or looking on the internet (a minor headache can become a life threatening illness) and as suggested previously, put your mind at rest and see a specialist asap.

It's probably nothing serious.

Let me get this right, an EXTERNAL examination showed fluid in your ear canal, not the eustacian tubes or anything like that, and no wax build up whatsoever?

Old folk ( not old folks, i mean, folk remedy, since hydrogen peroxide was discovered at least) remedy of hydrogen peroxide, suitably diluted, for removal of impacted ear wax-( the bubbling stuff nurses put in your ear if you have impacted ear wax) it also work against infections, just DYYDD, and dont burn out your tympanic membrane with incorrectly diluted stuff.

If you had barotrauma from flying, you would know all about it- so unlikely.

A situation like this can also occur from being to wet behind the ears, though, i have only anecdotal evidence in that regard.:smart:

But I am not going to do anymore 'net' diagnosis. I will see my GP today and insist that she refers me to an ENT specialist.

I actually saw my GP TO-day and the good news is she could see wax! :clap:

So, I am back to olive oil in the ear until Monday when I will have it syringed by a nurse so that a proper inspection and diagnosis can be made.

He told me to just keep putting Earex in even if it takes weeks to come out that when then you wont upset the wax's natural channell deep inside your ear.

Thanks. I've had my ear syringed a long time ago but I never realised it could take weeks to clear out with drops. This is why I have been so concerned.

How wonderful it is to hear the world again complete with high frequencies!!
