What information (& how) do you use to find the direction of S&P/DJ on a daily/ weekly basis?

Best indicator I'm aware of is the daily new high / new low index. Unfortunately there is no source I know that will give you this information and plot it for free. Some traders I know plot it themselves and it is also described in "Sell and Sell Short" by Alex Elder.

I want to ask the same question about the FTSE.
