I am still struggling with the basic identification of trends within trends in the currency markets.. Can someone assist ?

care to elaborate a tad Victor.....d'ya mean intraday trends within the recent larger frames??....what are you attempting to achieve? you looking at quick intraday punts?

in other words, what type of trading strat are you working off.

ps : can you sling up an example chart to further highlight your question maybe??

Buk has some good points. What timeframe are you interested in? Switch your charting display to that timeframe. What does it look like it's doing on your chosen pair? If it's hard to tell - it's probably not trending. If it's got higher lows, it's probably in an up trend. If it's got lower highs - it's probably in a down trend.

However, you need to take into account higher & lower timegrames (2 on each side unless you're at 1 min or tick already) and where the S&R levels are as well.

Victor....a couple charts of Cables recent movement from diff time frames.....the larger (240min) shows a trend change from mid Aug, whilst the shorter frame (15min) highlights more info on the last couple sessions. It really does depend which time frame(s) you're focusing on.

today's intraday picture has merely 'ranged' within a 50 pip bracket, offering punts off both the top & bottom without displaying any particular 'trend'.......along with trendlines, it's necessary to observe the basic s&r levels (as Tony commented) as well as any other accompanying "aids" in offering you a clearer picture of your intended trigger points.

anyway, hope it helps!
