Just noticed that the CME has recently launched a range of futures based on US house prices (here for details: http://www.cme.com/trading/prd/resources_HNG18558.html ).
Very interesting... so you could take a leveraged (mortgaged?) view on the residential property market, by region, without having to go round and deal with stroppy tenants or broken boilers. Transaction costs / liquidity a bit better than having to put your buy-to-let house on the market too. Or use to hedge your existing property portfolio. Just need LIFFE to launch the same product for UK housing...
