Im new to spread betting have and have recently opened an account with IG Index. I am generally impressed with the site and the charts that are on offer through this company. I would be interested to hear however what the charts are like in other companies and how they compare to what IG isoffering since I trade using technical analysis.

Hello BigSkins,

I use IG, WS, CMC and Finspreads. I'd say the charting packages are similar for all the SB co's (WS aside, who don't offer it from memory).

I'm not into indicators so don't push any of the charting facilities, but Id suggest if you are you should look at seperate charting software. To be fair, CMC do have a backtesting facility which from memory is just a link to pro-realtime (a free and highly rated package)

Good luck with the spreadbetting.

Cheers,
UTB

IG historical charts are good, but seem to be the same as Fins for tick charts. I prefer Fins, because once you have the tick chart open you can close the s'bet application, whereas if you do that with IG it will close the chart too - I don't trade through Fins, just use their charts!

CMC has the most functions in terms of TA and adjustability, but also has a serious drawback (IMO) in that it will always do an analysis based on its 24-hr quote - ie if you want to do a moving average or whatever based on the 'real' price during the trading day you can't - moreover intraday MAs will be thrown out because they'll count the overnight periods when not much might happen. I don't know why they don't let you turn this off and have market-hours graphs, because it mucks up what would otherwise be by far the best package. Obviously if you're trading forex then this isn't a problem as it's a 24-hr market anyway.

I use CMC (for forex) and also think there charts are good. Only problem for me is there data doesn't go back as far as I'd like it too. (ie 15mins charts go back about 2 months)

How far back do Fins go??

Thanks

The IG charts go back three months for anything down to an hour, a month down to 5 mins and 2 days for less than that. Fins are slightly less, ie their intraday data is one month max.

For trading forex, brent crude and DJI I use CMC charts and ProRealTime (end of day data is free), and for some historic research I would also go to Bigcharts.com. This is useful when using another computer as an extra monitor for studies and ongoing communication. Saxo Bank.com have also benn usefull and CSI end of day data.

Hi shjm,
does gftuk provide for a Trailing Stop-Loss, and how useful do you find their charting packet.

Yes they do have trailing stops. Download their demo and you can play for yourself. The demo is what you get on their live platform unlike a lot of other companies
