BRENT - UK Brent oil originates from the North Sea, specifically the East Shetland Basin between the Shetland Islands and Norway, with production shifting to a wider "BFOET" blend (Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, Troll) as original fields matured. As of late 2024, proven and probable (2P) UK oil and gas reserves are estimated at 2.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), with production declining from 1999 peaks.
Origin and Composition
Original Source: The Brent oilfield was discovered in 1971, with production starting in 1976.
The Blend: Due to declining production, the Brent benchmark now includes oil from various North Sea fields (BFOET) and, since 2023, oil from Midland, Texas.
Characteristics: It is known as "light" (low density) and "sweet" (low sulphur), making it ideal for high-quality refined products.
State of UK Oil Reserves
Declining Maturity: The UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) is a mature basin, with production peaking in 1999. 2024 production fell to roughly 630,000 barrels per day.
Remaining Reserves: At the end of 2024, proven/probable reserves stood at 2.9 billion boe, with another ~6.2 billion boe in contingent resources.
Future Outlook: Production is expected to fall significantly by 2030, with1,500 wells expected to be decommissioned between 2026 and 2030.
Market Position: While production is declining, the UK remains a significant producer, with substantial, albeit decreasing, self-sufficiency.
