Best place to live while trading?

I'm thinking of leaving the UK and wondered what everyone's opinions were of the best places to live while trading. I'd love to live in Thailand but fear that unstable Internet and latency issues could be a problem. Spain and Portugal seem like good options - plenty of British expats (a double-edged sword) and nice weather. Then there's Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Argentina...

The only thing I really need is good stable Internet. Where in the world would you most like to live and why?
 
NZ is a bit cold (depends on what you want) and the time zones are awful for trading. Even the Asian session is late in the day and the US session is deep sleep time for most.

Nice weather. Good links. Big country. Next door to NYSE? Double your money £1=$2...

:LOL: , I would say that the only thing that would beat San Sebastian is that double bang for your quid...... :LOL:

apart from that, simply think of the north of spain. best food, no brits, decent weather. cant get better than that. as for internet connection reliability....well, the UK is not exactly much better than Spain for that matter. and if you do happen to have an issue with it, just go and have some tapas and forget about it....you may even learn some Spanish....let alone Basque ;)

Cape Town, South Africa - Brilliant food, good internet and GMT time zone, cheap to live, weak currency will get you palatial abode in Camps Bay or Bantry bay (Much better than suspect Cypriot/Spanish construction standards).

Touch of crime to keep things interesting and the odd power failure to ensure you don't overtrade too.

you do have a point, apart from the "spicy part of life" (safety, and particularly the overtrading insurance policy you have just mentioned :LOL: )
 
Good suggestions so far. San Sebastian and Monoco would be great options if I was a millionaire but I'm not (yet!) so I'd prefer to keep the cost of living down to reasonable levels. It seems they are two of the most expensive places in Europe. New Zealand and Australia would be great to live in but too inconvenient for trading the US markets as I do. Long Island is worth considering and I was also thinking Chicago because I trade on the exchanges. I'd probably be more comfortable with Europe or South East Asia though because I know these areas so well. I hear there's more than a "touch of crime" in South Africa. If that wasn't such an issue it'd be great because I have a family background there and they're keen to encourage immigration.

trade us markets. want a cheaper place. then think of puerto rico, or some other place in the caribe.

only issue with puerto rico, is that if your kids learn spanish there, instead of pronouncing "r" the way it should, it will sound like "l", but i guess that is an issue only if you are a spanish speaker :LOL:
 
Malta - pluses: time zone, climate, people, history, culture, English is an official language, tax system for expats, property prices likely to go through the roof as they introduce full EC freedom of movement rules over next few years.
minuses - internet can be a bit ropey, not the cheapest place in the med, not very big - you'd need to escape to Italy every now and again.

By the way - this is quite a good resource (see links to country pages on left of page): www.lowtax.net - also has basic immigration information.
 
Geneva- Reasonable tax, the lake for summer watersports, mountains for boarding in winter, near france and italy. Downside is its expensive and i believe housing is a nightmare if you're foreign.

Turks & Caicos/Bahamas, Barbados- sun, sea and no-tax.

San Sebastian- like the idea, heading there in 07 to check the place out, I hear its amazing.

Ireland- think there is some tax deal for foreigners. Downside is its very expensive and the weather is mostly awful.

Gibraltar has tax deals, cheap to live (i think), LOTS of traders out there (is that really a good point though?!?).

Lots of choice :D

minx - you've obviously never been to Gib! ;)
The ONLY thing in its favour is the weather and, if that's what floats your boat, you're better off - much better off - in mainland Spain!

I can imagine, although I know a few people living there and they seem to be coping alright. Dont forget the tax situation too.
 
With its easy to rent condos with fibre internet connection Malaysia looks a good choice. English is widely spoken too and it's close to all those SE Asia holiday destinations.
