Bought this game (Commander in Chief Geo-Political Simulator 2009, Eversim) just this week and so far am absolutely the worst Head of State, worse than Gordon Brown even. I have not managed to survive beyond 3 months from inauguration.

I notice there are Dow and FTSE charts in the game which generally head south as I am appointed: at the very least I'd like to see these have a positive year. Next game, I intend a Cabinet re-shuffle asap, to get some more popular (and pliable) party members into Whitehall quickly.

Anybody doing better? Worse????

You'll have to tell me what it's like because I always spend a few minutes in the video game department every week. I have fancied myself as a Battle of Britain pilot, but can't get off the ground. It must be something to do with the transverse thrust of the prop because I can't keep straight on take-off. Then I tried a submarine commander simulator. That bored me. I've, also tried one of the "Age of Conquest" games which was OK until it got a bug. Since they all cost a lot more than a good book, I am wary of getting anythng else.

So, please, keep me informed! It needs to be something that needs some thinking because those fast reflex, quick on the draw ones, are not good for me at my age. :D

I have found a good and so far free game from Evony.com .

You get 7 days to build up your town into a stronghold free from attack. This is my 7th day so I'll probably get wiped out tomorrow !!

There are Empires of alliances and things which I haven't discovered yet, but a bit slow for some I guess.

I do enjoy strategy-based games. Commander in Chief has some silly features: partly it seems to have been poorly translated into English from the original French, but also translates not so well from the French view of the world to the Anglo-Saxon/American - meetings with Union leaders are always referred to as meetings with the Syndicates: and the game seems to inherently reward state interventionist initiatives and penalise moves to liberalise capitalism. On the other hand, in a refeshingly frank, 'Continental' way, it seems quite beneficial to either attempt to seduce influential female political figures or make them one's Mistress, and the two options are separate.

But its early days. This is not one for quick trigger fingers - there are no animations whatsoever, the game mechanics are derived by clicking on static maps, personal organiser, multi-choice options or budget spreadsheets. Its nice that even at Novice level the game does not warn you what will happen if you attempt to pass some particular legislation - you discover the conesequences when this goes to the House, the press and the public. As I discovered when I found I had financed what turned out to be a terrorist organisation in Mexico. Definitely one for thinking before acting.
