I'm still studying - 2nd year of Bachelors completing the CISI lvl 3 cert in invest management over dec - jan. Want to get a little extra magic and cant start CFA or CMA till next year... What software / programming languages would you recommend for analysts? Obviously excel is a must but what about vba etc?

I'm a retired software engineer so I've used quite a few programming languages to develop, evaluate and manage trading strategies. VB, VBA, Fortran and PHP among others. Yet, today I would choose none of these while evaluating and qualifying a trading strategy. Instead I would use one of the GUI based testing platforms such as Prodigio available through the ThinkOrSwim trading platform. Introductory Video to Prodigio is about 50 minutes long but will give you a good idea of what can be done and how one goes about it.
