Sorry to start a new thread about this, but I can't find any information on what this "reputation" thing is all about. What constitutes "a lot"? What constitutes "a little"? Where does it all come from?

:D Don't worry about it, db, In your case, it's too late, now that you have one, whether it's good or bad, learn to live with it.

One of the problems about having a good reputation is that one could become afraid of getting it tarnished, hobnobbing with the likes of F, for example (n).

You get reputation from the "likes" that you receive on your posts . In the past this translates into stars shown publicly but not anymore .

Hi dbp,
I assume you're being literal and are referring to the use of the 'Thumbs Up' facility? If so, then in some respects it's exactly the same as it was when you last spent a lot of time here and, in other respects, it's totally different. It's the same in terms of the way one uses it. It's different in terms of what each member uses it for. Originally - you may recall - each member would accrue points which were displayed graphically as stars (or something like that) by their username. The number of stars reflected the member's status within the community. Then the whole system got abused and the stars and status were done away with. What remains is the mechanism which can be used either to show support for a post or to convey a short message in lieu of sending a PM or e-mail.

With regard to 'a lot' and 'a little' and where they come from, are you referring to the number of points accrued and reputation power? If so, this is just a hangover from the past and has no meaning or significance for anyone anymore.
Tim.

I see Facebook is considering introduction of a Thumbs Down disapproval facility - could be a useful and time-saving addition for us also.

As I recall that was considered some years ago but, as well as being negative, the feeling was that it was likely to be abused far more heavily than the thumbs up was being :devilish:.

As i understand it was implemented not just considered ...

Just in case anyone is taking this the wrong way which, for political reasons, I'm sure that it will, I have never had any issues with F.

Tim.

Actually I was referring to this "reputation power" thing. I should think that if one had a power level of 50 million or so that he could at least trade it for a tin of biscuits. If not, why not just wipe it from the member's record or profile or whatever it's called?

Yes indeed, back in the day, as in T2W's heyday, I think that was the idea. As I say, the system was then abused and discredited. That it's still here is because the mechanism is useful for the purposes I outlined earlier.

The numbers are just part and parcel of that. vBulletin isn't my strong point (to put it mildly) but, whenever I've asked Sharky about such things in the past, his answer is usually along the lines that our version of the software isn't that customizable - unless one throws developer time and money at it. Of all the things that could be done to improve the forum, housekeeping of this sort is quite far down on the list.

Just out of curiosity, how was the system abused? Why would grown men care about how many reputation points they had?

I suppose you will have to explain "taking the pi55 out of everything" as I am hopeful you are not talking about urination.
