Hi,

I want to have a router which runs on my Cable but if that is down switches over seamlessly and immediately to my EDGE or 3G service. Would be even better if it had 2 WAN ports so I could plug in cable and DSL.

I would like to know what my options are and especially if any major router manufacturers like Dlink or linksys, etc. makes them.

thanks!

plenty of manufacturers make dual WAN routers - that'd be your best option imo.

try someone like Xincom (www.xincom.com) - their X-16R gives up to 8 WAN ports - a bit of overkill maybe. Otherwise get yourself over to newegg.com - they had Hawking H2BR4 dual wan routers for $70USD back in June. Up from that you could get a Hotbrick BH-LB2 from the same place; all good hardware.

If you can get hold of a back issue of Active Trader magazine, their June issue carries a nice little article on Load Balancing Routers; I should know - I wrote it ;)

Back issues available on the website for $4 an issue (no I don't make a commission on it).

The article is here. A Dlink dual WAN router is here.

Note that although the router may switch seamlessly your quote providers and brokers will see your ip address change so I believe that you will need to resynch/restart most applications at fail over.

ah, that sucks... but at least it's better than losing the internet connection completely.

thanks for the info, really helps. But I'm still confused how 3G or EDGE can fit into this. I've never used them before. Are there 3G/EDGE modems that I can just plug into one of these routers the same way I'd plug in a DSL or Cable modem?

The only thing I'm aware of is something like this - but how well that fits your criteria I don't know. The resync is still going to be an issue of course - there's no getting around that.
