It's not like people didn't know that the US is up to the eyeballs in debt. Just a news driven reaction IMO.

The Euro is pretty well bust too. When Ireland, Greece etc. have spent their new loans they will be back for yet another hand out. The Germans are going to realize fairly sonn imho that they should be put in Euro B club for the less able.

USD. I think the 'world' has accepted that it's the only game in town. Gold is just an inflationary hedge.

It is inherently useless though - it is just an alternative means of exchange but it's inherent qualities are fairly arbitrary in the same way a fiat currency is.........

That's only because they are socially conditioned to believe it has intrinsic value. I could achieve a better result by giving the Mrs £1k and telling her to buy herself something nice.
