Praying won't move the markets obviously but according to Strauss...

Studies of the traits of survivors have noted one thing they had in common was prayer, even if they didn't necessarily believe in God. Prayer helps keep one's thoughts organized and mind focused. After all, the greatest survival skill one can have is to avoid panicking in an emergency, and instead to stay calm, organized, focused, decisive, and determined.

I should note, I'm not advocating prayer and not particularly religious...just found this somewhat interesting. :)

This is a contradictory statement, if you don't believe in God then why pray and to who or what ?

Its odd how a near death experience can bring out the believer in folk!

(Grabbing at straw maybe).

I wouldn't call myself overtly religious.

I'm Christian. I've been baptised.

I believe that there is "something" out there.

But I don't go to church, I don't read the bible and I don't say prayers.

However, as much as religious folk may despise me for my seeming hypocrisy, if I was on a boeing 747 and the red seatbelt light comes on, the oxygen masks come down and the captain says "ladies and gentlemen, we've lost pressure in both our engines and we're going down...please assume the crash position".

Not only do I believe in God but I will be the first one with hands together praying to the almighty to save my soul.

A true believer wouldn't bother praying as they know they're about to meet the person they've dedicated their whole life to. :D

Praying won't help you...
...........if you're in a losing trade.

Just get to the hell out before it gets worse (if you're reading this everyonerich, it doesn't apply to plunging airliners btw)

What a brilliant thought provoking post!!!!

I wonder if suicide bombers use the same logic

Praying won't help you - but we've all been told Allah will, or fibonacci, or horizontal lines, or the bible etc....

As a devout atheist I'm actually quite comfortable with the concept of nothingness after death. That's it - it's final you just cease to be.

I have a real problem with the concept of the soul - people seem to think they'll be able to spent time with their relatives, shag virgins whatever... but imagine an elderly gentlemen with late onset of Alzheimer's, if you've ever seen someone at late stages of this disease then there are no lights on. They are unaware of their surroundings and simply sit, do not move and do not respond to external stimulae. Arguably these people still have a soul. So if your soul does not comprise your alertness, conciousness, self-awareness, memory and thinking ability then what is it? Strip away all that is not your soul what do you have left? It can't think, see and is not self aware... It would be the equivalent of that stretch of last night that you were totally unconcious that you can't remember - without the dreaming.

If that's the case then I simply don't see the point. Put my soul in hell for all you want, I won't be aware of anything anyway.

What keeps me away from hard atheism is consciousness... I don't see any explanation for this at all, yet.

However all religions I am aware of there are pretty fundamental flaws...

I read Eric Clapton's autobiography and at his lowest point with drugs and alcohol, he turned to prayer despite having no previous belief in god. This gave him belief in a higher power and he continued to use prayer.

what if two people take opposite sides of a trade, and both pray, which one is it gonna help?

time for some george carlin

"America prays for God to destroy our enemies, our enemies pray for God to destroy us; somebody’s gonna be disappointed. Somebody’s wasting their ****ing time. Could it be, everyone?”

maybe 'praying' in a trade is just developing a focus and a belief to hold on to your original reasons for taking the trade and hoping it works out that way, during a difficult drawdown period.
same as praying on a plane in trouble, you just hope your original plan - getting to your destination safely - will work out.
just a thought. cos i'm not religious.
