US default, USD collapse: which currency to do best?

All coins carry a premium:
http://www.goldcore.com/products_services/bullion/details/GBRIT/EUR
Extract from above site:
"As with most one ounce gold bullion coins, they are made
available to world bullion dealers at a small premium over the current gold fix,
so that after distribution costs, the coins would be available to investors in
quantity at a attractive premium over intrinsic gold values."

You want CGT and VAT free physical gold, thats the premium you pay.
Every other coin dealer is exactly the same:

http://www.thegoldbullion.co.uk/buy-gold-britannia-coins/2013-gold-britannia

Then you have the issue of selling it on:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...Buy-gold-they-say-but-how-do-you-sell-it.html
Thats the price of tax free physical ownership with no storage costs (uninsured is something else...).

For those reasons, I personally think this is the more efficient option:
http://www.bullionvault.com/
Secure storage is covered, and the gold is audited as good delivery:
http://www.bullionvault.com/modal/_good-delivery-system-modal.html
Read the FAQ on that site, the world gold council has an 11% stake:
http://www.gold.org/investment/partners/bullion_vault/
Also you can choose storage jurisdiction, most BV clients choose Zurich.

Other than that, this is the best value option in spot price terms for physical:

Let's face it LV - Shakone's post is the only one worth a damn. You should provide links regarding point shooting and hand to hand combat to truly help the moon barkers. Else what's to stop me taking all their hoarded gold off them when the world comes to an end? I could then buy bread leaf by leaf with all their toil.

Worldwide doomsayers regarding monetary systems and total collapse have existed since the Medicis and eventually, one day, they'll be completely right. Perhaps this makes them slightly less detestable than those waiting for the "mashiach" et al. However, we are forced to forgive them every time they're wrong in between. And my god it's boring.

I really like this post.

There is absolutely no chance the US government will willingly allow the US to go over the edge - taking the rest of the planet with it. There are limits, even to stupidity. With apologies to Einstein.

 Fair point, and agree.
Thats why I think physical gold has too many drawbacks,
most realistic being audited quality, also the fact that if things got as bad
as some think, physical gold would make you a target.

Being realistic, I'm talking more in terms of gold as a capital store should inflation
get out of hand.
Inflation getting out of hand is decidedly more probable and realistic than
end world armageddon for sure.

Nothing new or unusual at all.
Although its fair to say there are no recent examples of major developed
countries on that list.

I mentioned that Japan is worse than the U.S. earlier.

So anything is possible, at least in terms of protracted can kicking.
