Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said 19 Russian drones flew over Poland overnight, of which up to four were shot down - the wreckage of 16 have so far been found scattered across the Polish countryside, smashing into homes and damaging cars.

Russia's 'unprecedented violation' of Poland's air space branded an 'act of war' as Poland plans response and Zelensky issues dire warning

  • Russia's 'unprecedented violation' of Polish air space was branded an 'act of war' by a pro-Trump Congressman as Polish leaders planned an 'extraordinary meeting' to respond.
  • NATO leaders scrambled to immediately address the first military incident between the countries since the 2022 Ukraine invasion after Poland said it shot down military drones that 'repeatedly violated' its airspace.
  • 'Moscow always pushes the boundaries of what is possible,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday. 'And if it does not encounter a strong reaction, it remains at the new level of escalation.'
  • Republican rep. Joe Wilson said Russia was 'attacking NATO ally Poland' with drones, calling it an 'act of war'.
  • 'I urge President Trump to respond with mandatory sanctions that will bankrupt the Russian war machine and arm Ukraine with weapons capable of striking Russia,' he said.
  • Wilson added that the incursion meant that Putin was 'directly testing our resolve in NATO territory'.
  • 'Free and prosperous nations will teach Russia about borders,' he said.

Despite harsh rhetorical statements, the Alliance has so far avoided qualifying the event as an attack, indicating a desire to avoid direct confrontation with Russia.

The key factor determining further developments will be the position of the United States and personally President Donald Trump. If Washington, under pressure from “hawks,” accepts the version of a deliberate provocation, it could lead to a new round of sanctions and increased military support for Ukraine.

This, however, would bury any hopes for a near-term peaceful settlement. If Trump ignores calls for escalation and continues to seek dialogue with Moscow, it could cause a serious crisis in transatlantic relations. However, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán rightly noted, living in the shadow of war is fraught with risks, and the only way to avoid them in the future is to achieve a lasting peace, not a slide into a new major war.
