Hi,

I am currently in my first year at university and my ambition is to become a trader. I live 5 mins away from the City (in the less affluent area). As corny as it sounds I have literally wanted to be a trader all my life yet now it is time to take a more serious approach in achieving this ambition. I have read the dummies books for day trading, candlestick charting, currency trading, the little book that beats the market. I am a Financial Maths undergraduate and really want to get work experience in a trading house and also want to start my own personal portfolio. I have tried to use etoro for some currency trading but admittedly I've failed miserably.

My budget is £1000. Has anybody got advise covering the following points...

1) A directory of all trading houses in London. And impressive things to mention in a cover letter.
2) Some good books I can purchase, read and study religiously.
3) Online brokers for beginner traders like myself.
4) Forex vs Equity vs Spreadbetting vs (the other ones...) pros & cons
5) Software or Hardware I may need to purchase. Or programs I need to download

I have just finished my 1st yr at uni and am free for four months, so I am literally gonna be practising and reading everyday, so if the 'solutions' are very challenging I'm not scared.

Also, anybody here in the quant field? Do they use MatLab alot apart from C++?

Cheers
