tick time

For the time variable charts may use 5 min, 10min., 100tick, 200tick , or other
as suits the charter. Pardon the simple question, but what unit of time is the tick?
Does the tick amount vary with the product (underlying)? Does the tick unit depend on
an amount of movement of the product? Or is a tick simply an amount of time considerably less than the minute.
