You are at a railway station waiting for your train. You want a coffee. You buy a very hot cup of coffee and the milk in a separate little jug. It is very hot coffee. Your train is due in 5 minutes and you can't take your coffee on the train with you.

In order to drink the coffee at it's lowest possible temperature in 5 minutes time do you :-

(a) pour all the milk in NOW and let it cool down OR

(b) wait until the train comes in AND THEN pour all the milk in?

Which operation will yield a cup of coffee at the lowest temperature?

Guesswork, physics, math, general off-topic banter all appreciated and welcome.

is it a Virgin train ?
if it is, both (a) and (b) are valid options.
In fact, you can order a 8-course dinner, and you will still be waiting for the chuffing (see what I did there, a pun on trains, and chuffs :) ) train.

To accelerate the cooling process by maximising surface area etc.spread the coffee over a flat surface, the platform will be fine for this, if you need to drink from the cup then, the next challenge is to get it back in... always a mickey d's litter fest anyway, forget desease use a discarded straw taken from a empty or part empty shake carton, further snooping may result in breakfast in form of discarded burgers etc being tossed about freely,... hmmmm tastes like chicken........

suck contents up off platform floor (this again will help cooling, air flow and stuff) spit contents at a distance of 18 inches being maintained into cup, again cooling here........

milks for whimps and if you follow the above and add it now, the coffee will be too cold ,, do the decent thing, push your thumb straight through it and toss it at whoever, to aid covertness, release an audible yet informal remark about the size of pigeons and in the locale and their toileting habbits, another casual remark along the lines of F*** me, thats a coincedence chief, on impact, should help maintain your innocence and enable you to give a cheary wink as you finish your brew and prepare to board your transport.

hmmm.

I think that fxmarkets has a near solution, in drinking it through a straw would make the coffee cooler.

Other than that, pour the milk in immediately and then keep stirring the coffee until the train comes.

Alternatively, get a car with a cup holder.

G-Man

1. pour the milk into the coffee
2. pour as much milked-coffee as you can back into the milk jug from a height - 3' 9" is optimum
3. pour contents of milk jug back into coffee cup - again from 3' 9" although anything over 2' 3" will suffice
4. repeat this process until train is sighted arriving at platform
5. drink what coffee remains in the cup
6. smuggle remaining coffe onto the train soaked in your trousers, ignoring comments about aged incontinence
7. remove to toilet (when train has left the station)
8. wring out trousers into a carefully folded copy of the Times
9. enjoy the illegal coffee
10. smirk at trains "coffee-guard "official on return to seat
