THAMES BARRIER
One man and his dog, an Alsatian named Zen, aboard a houseboat on the Thames, are the guardians of an operation dedicated to saving the world from a tidal wave of spam. At the nerve centre of Spamhaus.org, below decks in the floating headquarters moored near Hampton Court, is a computer controlling servers on five continents and a database tracking the most prolific spammers and the addresses of the 8,000 computers they use. Team leader Steve Linford and fifteen helpers supply their information to Internet service providers, which use the data to weed spam from the e-mail boxes of 160 million users. Founded in 1998, Spamhaus.org takes no money for its services and the crew of volunteers uses donated computers.
