News magazines' cover stories bear watching
Los Angeles Times - US Abstracts; Mar 21, 2001
Newsweek, Time and U.S. News & World Report have all run cover stories on the bear market this week. Given that the mainstream media normally only discover the existence of a bear market once the worst is already over, that may be good news for the market. Market turnaround experts remained cautious, though, noting that the stories address the possibility of a recession but do not reach any conclusions. U.S. News managing editor Brian Kelly agreed that the coincidence of the cover stories may indicate that the story is old, but said that the stock market is the leading news story for this week and had to go on the cover.
