Always loved them. Here's one:

A ball and bat together cost $1.10. The bat costs one dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

No cheating allowed must come up with the :idea: yourself

The ball costs $.05 + $1.05 (1 dollar more) for the bat = $1.10

Can you solve this riddle?

Two spies want to get in an enemy's military base.In order to get in they have to give the correct countersign to the guard at the gate after he gives them the sign. So they wait hidden nearby the gate so that they will overhear the countersign from another soldier.

One soldier comes and the guard gives the sign: "6".The soldier answers "3".The guard lets him pass. Another soldier comes.The guard says "12" and the soldier gives the answer "6".The guard lets him pass. So, the first spy goes at the gate and the guard asks says "10".The spy, sure that he knew the answer as he was, says "5". Immediately, the guard shoots him dead.

Then the other spy, who saw that the other spy was killed when he gave the countersign, had now understood what the right answer would be, whatever the guard's sign was.So, he walks to the gate and the guard says "8".The spy gives the correct answer and the guard lets him in. What was the answer that the spy gave?

The answer is "5". The countersign is always the number of letters of the number that the guard gives. ("six" has 3 letters and "twelve" has 6 letters. After the two soldiers passed, the first spy thought the answer was the half of the number that the guard gave (like what you also might have thought), so he answered 5 when the guard said 10, which was wrong as ten has 3 letters)

Good thread idea Pip'. I'm hopeless at these - your first two stumped me!

Here's an old riddle that became well known in the U.K. yonks ago in an episode of Dr. Who in which the time travelling Doctor and his young female assistant were imprisoned in a room with two doors. One door leads to freedom - the other to certain death. Each door has a guard: one always tells the truth and the other always lies. Not only does the Doctor not know which door is which, but he also doesn't know which guard is which. He's allowed to ask one question to either guard (it makes no difference which one he asks), the answer to which will guarantee that he and his companion exit the door to freedom. What is the question he must ask?





ANSWER
Addressing either guard, the question the Doctor must ask is - "If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to freedom, which door would he point me to?"

Explanation . . .
No matter which guard the Doctor addresses this question to, that guard will always point him to the door leading to death. Therefore, whichever door the guard points to, the Doctor and his assistant must exit the other door. So, let's say that the Doctor addresses the truth telling guard - he will honestly tell him that the lying guard will point to the door to death. Conversely, If he asks the lying guard - he will lie to him by saying the truth telling guard will point him to the door to death.
