Does the rep system need reforming?

A poll to see who thinks the rep system should be reset; left alone; done away with.

My personal view: Get rid of it altogether. It encourages poor quality content and supports a school playground ethos (for instance "rep buddies"). It should be the quality of the posts that builds one reputation, not how many friends they have.

For example; JTrader - loadsa rep, loada bullsh!t.
Rhody Trader - magnificent contribution, not even a star.

Be done with it I say. The only positive I can see is for newbies to garner some idea of who is experienced and who isn't - and that's a load of b0ll0cks anyway, let them figure it out for themselves.

Screencap leaderboard for great justice!

Is the level of this reflected in how much reputation has been given say, for example, to your good self ? :)

If it gives a middle aged bloke a cheap thrill, keep it

haha... don't be all bitter because my laptop is widescreen and thus missed you off as 'printscreen' only just got gammerjammer in

what about changing the rep function to a "note" function? Then shows as a note, and a hover mouse over reveals the content of note left by other members to that post ... etc..

that way peopl can leave a note without posting..... the notes as it were ... all members can read the notes left. by hovering their mouse ?

or is that all a bit too gay ? LOL

THAT is a damn good idea IMO.... See whether its just LMAO or something with context regards the post made...

Agree. Also, dangerously for the newbie, it doesn't differentiate between rep for good trading advice & tuition as opposed to rep for just commenting on the state of the world in general.

After a while on this forum you get to know who's worth listening to; I'd just like to retain the facility to give the rep as a footnote to a post but do away with the star counts etc.

Can't really get too excited about it all - crap is crap whatever the rep given. And if you can't make up your own mind about someone else's opinions or a set of facts then you're probably not suited to trading (IMHO!)

Pains me to recognise good sense being posted (you had to post one eventually :cheesy:), but your sentiments regarding rep and the opportunity it possibly denies newbies (or anyone for that matter) to judge for themselves is sound. Fully supported.

Yes, it's all too gay.

What's wrong with simply posting a response. That's the purpose of a Bulletin Board. To promote discussion.

If it's a genuinely private issue then the PM facility does the job nicely.

Yah, know what you mean, Note function, would handle things & comments, like..

"nice one", well done, thats what I was thinking... etc etc... I think some members generally like to offer little nods of agreements,(and the rep function seems to facillitate that natural need at present in a lot of cases?) and note function would provide that without people having to post a "discussion response" which might be something more than the note.....

I can see the benefit of sub comments in helping to keep discussion threads pure, but I guess a part of discussion, is sometimes people expressing mere approval of content.... and they do this via the rep function ...?

Hey it might morph into one post in a thread with 1800 note comments ! Sick huh ??? :)

I dunno....

Chit Chat Button. Eureka !!!

Ok , how about this......

members like to acknowledge individual post content from time to time, at the moment this is often done using the Rep button.

NOW. We have a new button called "Chit Chat" this button is available on all posts made which will provide the need for members to leave a chit chat comment relevant to the post.

All members can read the "chit chat" comments by hovering the mouse over the chit chat left by each member. Chit chat comments may be helpful to the original post . However if further deeper expansive discussion is felt needed then new posts can be made as per usual......

Example ;

Post from member.

Look at this chart showing my support at 142.50....

Chit Chat Crap Buddist. Yeah nice one, I've been eyeballing that all week from 142.40 on my setup !

(It would also keep small post specific comments linked directly to the original post ! Rather than it popping up pages later etc)

You see ? How the little mouse over hover button would reveal possible sexy extras ? :D

Chit Chat Buttons We like ?

Then maybe reps can be left to be used for reps if members had Chit Chat !

And chit chat is often a part of real life discussion too so making chit chat option in sub comments will fufil the need for people to express their chit chat !

Is it time for my baseball bat ? Please, Swing Away ! :cheesy:

Chatter might be another shorter name for it...... you get the idea..... toodlepip.

I dont particularly care anymore, but I know that when I first joined the site, I wanted to know who could actually trade, as in, had made lots of good realtime calls - so i could learn from them.
Maybe 'rep' could be divided into a few different categories (like humour / realtime calls / helpful posts, etc) and you click the appropriate one on a post.

However, im actually quite indifferent. I just responded cos im bored and waiting for 'family guy' to start....

Well I wouldn't like to see it eliminated. Negative rep would be good too. The reason I like to see the rep, is not actually because I care about the stars. I care about the post. As a newb, it is sometimes hard to know when someone is talking BS, or actually saying an important truth. If you see a post saying something like that, and you see it repped by certain members of the board who do know a bit about trading, it helps separate the wheat from the chaff. That is useful to me at least.

Did you ever catch any of JTader's posts....?

Rep is only reputable if it has come from reputable sources, as you say. But few make that distinction.

The entire system is flawed and has led IMV to a degredation in this site's overall content. That used to be my job...
