Does anyone know if there is a simple and effective way of removing this nasty from my computer.

I am running Vista and have read somewhere that doing a system restore in safe mode will do the job.

Is this correct and if so, what are the exact steps for doing this ?

Thanks

Many thanks but I already did what I described in post #1 and it has been successful.

I made sure that I selected a Restore Point prior to the time when the virus first appeared and hey presto, the problem seems ( fingers crossed ) to have gone away.

I did this from Safemode with Networking.

Get Malware Bytes and run that. It's a good program anyway. Those viruses can be a nightmare to remove and usually require going into the registry to get them off.

Thanks

Yes, I read somewhere that Malaware Bytes was the real biz.

Thanks for the confirmation of that ....... you can't always believe what you read on the net.

It may also help to now create a new restore point and after that delete all the old restore points.

Beware!!!! This virus will fake the Malwarebytes scan. Beware!!!

You have to go into safe mode and run Malwarebytes of a flash drive.

Otherwise you will accomplish nothing. Believe me. I've been there.

Do you think a System Restore in safemode is enough ?

The virus seems to have gone away but could it be lurking in the depths of my files somewhere?

Only way you can be 100% sure is to re-install Windows & applications on to your re-formatted hard drive (and anywhere else it may have infected). A pain in the ar$e for sure and last resort.

You're better off seeing if there are entries in the registry and then removing them.

I personally use MalwareBytes and Advanced System Care with COMODO Internet Security. Weekly scans, weekly defrags, and no automatic updates or downloads. I say this very often to people, "99% of computer problems are user related." Catching and getting viruses is kind of like trading; when you know the trend, know the signs, you can make the right call. Also, use FireFox, you can delete cookies, your history, and keep a good tab on what you're doing on the Internet to keep yourself relatively away from harm.
