A really interesting programme on R4 last night about an Indian professor ( sorry forgotten his name ) from a business University who walks with about 150 others from village to village in India chatting to any villagers who have inventions, local knowledge of plants for medecine or crops etc. The 150 people are a motley collection of biologists, medics, business entrepreneurs, engineers etc. etc. even a holy man to say blessings. This is to preserve something of a huge well of local knowledge that is being swepped away by new factories etc.
This has already turned up plants unknown to science, new inventions that have now been patented etc. Any profits or benefits are securely attributed to the individual and village.
He is thinking of trying the same in the UK !! Hope he is not too disappointed with the average couch potato in front of the telly.
