I realise there are sites which copy forum threads exactly and archive sites too, but giving everyone new names and me a dodgy photo of a balding fat guy in sunglasses seems weird.

not directly comparable - & still to be proven whether it was the owners or hackers, but outlines how controlling the whole environment (forum / market place / whatever) could be v fruitful....

though the above scam was done on the darknet still doesnt mean that its inconceivable on the transparent www - so many scam sites exist untroubled & anonymous.

...but perhaps more plausible - the copied posts were just to generate conversation/footfall/ad clicks etc?
