If they haven't unloaded their property portfolio already then they'll be decending that list pretty quickly.

Also if you have a £1m house with a £900k mortgage - does that count as £100k or £1m of wealth in this list?

Good point. A friend of ours owns 92 properties and they are nearly all mortgaged up to the hilt. He's been scratching around the last few weeks for money to pay the mortgage on a £1 million house he bought recently. Think he'll be looking for a cardboard box soon.

If not just Heirs and Heiresses, these are probably mostly people born into wealth, initially, with family resources to play/speculate with.
I doubt many have made it out of the flats and into the rich list. These people are likely to be playing with daddys money, and daddy was likely to be playing with grandfathers money etc.

At the end of the day knowone should need more than £2-3 million to see themselves comfortably through 50+ years.
But, good luck to those true entrepreneurs in the list, who managed to identify a market condition, and exploit it for all its worth, through honest, legal and morally acceptable endeavours, whether or not they came from the council estates or from a country manor.
But at the end of the day, they are all only human, just like the next person.

Hi Jtrader,

Good moral points you bring up but of course it is only in your opinion. Heres mine:

One problem we have with the £2-3 miliion to live on comfortably is that lest us not forget that half the worlds population (3 billion) live on less than $2 dollars per day. This beggers the question, do we actually need £2-3 million to live on comfortably? How many lives would this money save? But of course, we spend more on a pint of beer than is needed to feed a family and keep them alive for a day. Do we need that extra pint poisoning our bodies and shortening our lives when we could be saving a life.

Dont get me wrong here, this is my moral side kicking in, I smoke and drink excessively and waste good food at restaurants, but it does bring home when I spout this from my concious how very little I give to those who need it most.

I think its a minimum of 10m to cover inflation etc.....

If hyperinflation hits, then £2-3 million might not seem like a lotto. But, overall, i wouldn't be worrying too much about inflation.
If hyperinflation did occur, with my £2-3 million I'd own outright at least one property, that will always keep a roof over my head, and money in the bank gaining hyper-inflated interest rates.
Without hyperinflation, and under normal market conditions, I could stick £2 mill in the bank gaining an average of 5% interest perhaps over the long haul, thats £100k per year.
All i need to pay for now is food, clothing, other material objects, taxes, fuel, and entertainment.
And i always have the option of getting a normal job just like the rest of the population.

What about a yacht, fancy holidays, South Pacific Islands (cheaper than a 3 bed london semi btw!), first class fancy living, crystal champagne jacuzzis with the ladies, Aston Martins and casino nights.... What about the best for the kids futures, what about the wifes shopping trips...

We ae in the business where the limits are endless and I for one am taking advantage of this. If all I wanted was a decent salary and to get by, for the hours I work, I may as well get a normal job... **** that... I am in this for the money as much as anything else, and even after all the above shopping, I still want 5000 a week minimum till the day I die!

Certainly not gonna retire now with just a couple and have this thought in my head...................

And i always have the option of getting a normal job just like the rest of the population.

:eek::eek::eek:

We all have different spending and lifestyle desires, and our earning requirements should reflect this. One style is not superior to the other. One is not wrong and the other right. They are just different approaches, to money and lifestyle, that reflect the individual.

I can get by without a yacht, small pacific island etc. I am a minimalist, when it comes to spending and filling my house with junk etc.
But for me, i agree to some extent with Tyler Durden, who said in fightclub - "The things you own end up owning you.";)

I am in no way saying anything about superiority nor do I think that is the case and I agree, ones earning should reflect ones personality but, fo me, after all the time I have put in, my ultimate goal is to retire early and not have the concern of money... If I can do that and have a yacht, then why not! This business has unlimited financial possibilities and I cherish that along with the freedom it can offer.

Each to their own though, you are very right.

I agree, everyone wants to enjoy the fruits of their labours, regardless of job type.

Only other things to add to the list of expenses is insurance, health care etc.

Thats more like it.
2-3 over a lifetime is about the salary you would earn on the treadmill of making your boss rich. Albeit a nice salary its worth saying. But who wants nice? And if your still feeling guilty, you could pracise what you preach and give your entire wealth to charity.

Its all relative. £1000 to me is £1,000,000 to someone like Mittal.

Funny how Putin isnt up there since its he who is the worlds richest man...oh well.

So you're worth £27,700,000 then? The begging letters in the post!;)
