Hi Guys,

1st off all sorry for the username - Its a name i've been using for approx 10 years now and i'vestuck with it, Its comes from the fact my names Will and that im Big/Fat. Not the other thing - ask my wife!!! Anyway, I'm 25, Married and looking to supplement my income.

Anyway, so far ive got a few stocks going and its not going well, due to Brexit maybe but i feel i'm missing something. Ive been using iPhone apps (GetStocks & TDInvesting) for my trading thus far which seems to off been a mistake and im now looking for advice on making sure my next step is the correct one.

My big questions is who can recommend a good beginner Broker/Platform combo for my MacBook? Maybe using Parallels if necessary.
I'd prefer it to be a UK based firm as i have a complicated tax scenario (Seafairer + Rental Property) and i'm aiming for Futures only at the moment.

PS i have tried the search feature!

Thanks Guys

I am kinda in the same boat...

I live in the US 6 months of the year and but i need a UK broker and platform as i do not have a social security number.

I use tradingView for analysis but I wanna trade on the same platform but I can't.

I have also tried various search engines, I have just joined City Index but the platform is nowhere near as good as trading view for technical analysis.

Thanks too

as a Brit with a US broker, I've never needed a Social Security number to open a US account, and I only trade Futures, so there is no tax in the equation.
Not sure what you guys are smoking

All,
IMHO, most people jump in to stack or other markets without leaning and mastering the subjects properly. Thereby, they take an enormous risks without even realizing it, special with their capital investment.

My opinion is either you study the subject well like an engineer studying engineering before building machines or start following someone you can trust.

If both options are not acceptable, its better to save your money in something like bonds.

Hi big Willy! Lol!! I am not one for recommending brokers, as middlemen they add more inefficiency than help but that being said, there is no harm in looking at different alternatives.

I use DeGiro for equities, they are cheap and technologically good. They expanded to the UK I switched immediately to them, the cost was cheap and it did what it says on the tin. They apparently are popular in Germany and Holland and offer the whole range of Stocks and Options, including more illiquid ETF's. It has been more than 6 months since I switched and all is good, so a few web complaints but so far not an issue and I just withdrew some cash from a 3 month investment, all is pretty smooth.

Hope this helps?

I guess Uk traders have the freedom to choose any broker for trading forex and binary options too, so it might be one of healthy options for those who wishes to earn money in their free time.

Thanks Guys -

I was torn between IB and IG but IG defiantly seems the better approach for me at this stage. I'm aiming at using Real Time Pro which is £30 though IG or free after 4 trades.

Does any one think that's a good or bad idea.

Hi BW (better if abbreviated?!),

I can completely sympathise in every way... I recently took the plunge myself (14 days ago) so much to learn!

I dunno if I can provide any specific advice however I've started a podcast to document our adventure and some of the guest maybe able to point you in the right direction (this Monday we have David Jones on Ex Head of Markets at IG Index... also if you have any 'newbie' questions you'd like the answer to (that you can't find on here) maybe worth letting me know and I can try to get a guest on to answer it...

I will also send you a PM anyhoo dude.

Kind regards,

Tom

whats not going well?
and why do you think its the application you're using is going to make things better rather than perhaps looking at your edge/method?

Hi bigwilly,
Welcome to T2W.

I've had an account with IB in the past and currently have one with IG - for the very reason you provide. The charting deal with ProRealTime (PRT) is fantastic. However, there is a caveat, and it's a biggy. IB is a direct market access broker and IG is a spread betting firm, i.e. a market maker who is on the other side of your trades. If you don't understand the ramifications of this and the pros and cons of each, then I recommend holding fire on a decision and doing some more research.

If you're clear about the market and instrument(s) you want to trade and the type of trading vehicle you wish to use to trade them, then the decision becomes easier. Ideally, you'd have a clear methodology worked out so, when you open your brokerage account, you know what you're doing and can hit the ground running. If you've not got that far, then I suggest you open a demo account with just about any spread betting broker that offers MT4 - which is all of them. Find one that gives you unlimited access so you can take your time. IG won't do this with their PRT deal - you'll only have a two week free trial. That said, once you fund your account and do the minimum number of trades per month, you can retain access to your demo account.

Hope that helps.
Tim.

Thanks for all the advice guys. All read and received.

I'm currently Demoing on RealTimePro with eventually with IG as my Broker - getting familiar with the software features, the price action etc, the candles, terms etc whilst I'm still researching everything and looking for a strategy.

I choose RTP as i've watched a few Youtube videos now regarding this software and it is completely mac based. Not saying i will or wont stick with it but i'm trying to get my head round one aspect at a time and RTP is currently most familiar to me. I imagine once i'm at the stage of regularly trading on RTP and have a good strategy i can try a different Broker/Platform with less confusion than i'm currently facing !!!!
@malaguti - For me it the abilty to draw trends etc. Even on the relativley massive iPhone 6 screen the apps where just too limiting on information. It was also a little too easy to buy shares in "Fevertree Tonic" whilst drinking it (with Gin). Ultimately though, I'm a bit of a software gimp and my job leaves me sat in front of my computer 'Looking busy' with an hour or so to spare.

Hi Tom,

Sounds good buddy! Good Luck.

Ill have a think about some thing. I'm really really new to all this. Got a A-Level in economics ~7 years ago and that's about as close to this sort of stuff as I get. I'm a Marine Engineer at trade!
